New River Trail Cottage

Built in 1880 by Dr. A.C. Shepherd, this historic cottage has served as a doctor’s office, a general store, and a boarding house. The cottage is located at marker p12 on the New River Trail. From the wrap around porch, you can listen to the rapids cascading into Claytor Lake. A boat launch is conveniently located less than 1/2 mile away offering free river access. (Please note that the river is not directly accessible from the property). It is the perfect location to play, relax, or both!

Constructed from two old tobacco barns (with fireplace), this property provides a unique experience-connecting the past & present. The cabin is surrounded by nature’s beauty and Big Reed Island river flows only feet from the front porch. Set on 32 acres, the cabin has a large porch with rocking chairs perfect to enjoy views of the river & mountains. New addition includes an outdoor shower! The treehouse offers 2 bedrooms, the master bedroom on the main floor with a rock shower and the loft bedroom with a half bath. The treehouse has a full wrap around porch with jacuzzi tub overlooking a spring branch and fire pit. Enjoy the outdoor shower with a 16” rainfall shower head under the treehouse next to the spring branch. Our gravel road welcomes you to a cozy home in the trees.

Have coffee on the porch while the sun rises, walk straight into the lake from the boat landing, enjoy relaxing on the patio, lay out in the sun, jump off the private dock, build a sandcastle on the beach, and then finish your day with a campfire in the fire pit while still looking at the lake with the moon shining down.
