Paper and the technique used to make it were introduced to Japan from China in ancient times. The materials used to create paper include various plant fibers, such as kozo—a mulberry variety, hemp, gampi, mitsumata, and more. There are two typical techniques used: “tame-suki,” which is the oldest and basic method transported from China, and “nagashi-suki,” which mixes the plant fibers with a sticky substance made from the inner bark and root of the plants. This is the unique method developed in Japan. During this experience, I will teach you the traditional Japanese papermaking using only kozo. We'll add vegetable dye, dried flowers, and other materials you have collected in Tokyo, and you will make your own original paper. You can pack it into a special box and send it to your home by mail. When we're done making paper, I'll serve a cup of Japanese tea to refresh you. If you'd like to see the Ghibli Museum after the workshop, it's just a five-minute walk away. It will be a splendid idea to experience both activities in one day.
Other things to note
While you're here for the workshop, in addition to the Ghibli Museum, I also recommend a visit to nearby Inogashira Park. It's one of the most beautiful parks in Tokyo and is a nice spot to see too.

Several years ago, I stayed in India for almost five years as a young artist overseas sent by the Agency of Cultural Affairs. During that time, I made friends with the Santal people, one of the indigenous tribes in India, and tried various art projects with them. Among those projects was papermaking, using the fiber from sugarcane. Now I've started a papermaking workshop in Japan and I'd like guests to experience the traditional Japanese papermaking using kozo, mitsumata, and various creative papermaking materials.

Tempat yang akan Anda datangi

We'll be in a traditional 1950s-style apartment located at the Kitsune —fox—Kubo crossing between Kichijoji and Mitaka Station. It is a well-known and popular location for both foreigners and native Japanese people. It is under a five-minute walk from the Ghibli Museum and Inokashira Park. The apartment is clean, peaceful, and located in a very safe area, surrounded by friendly neighbors. Nearby, you can find many cafes, bars, and shops.
