Yang akan Anda lakukan

Experience the idyllic beauty of Bali and help us keep it that way. I will escort you to the rural village of Tangkas, where we will be welcomed by Pak Darmawan and his wife, Puspa. They will serve tea, coffee, and snacks sitting on the family bale as everyone introduces themselves and gets comfortable.

Darmawan, with Puji translating, will brief us on the day’s activities. This includes a visit to Watu Klotok temple for a traditional Balinese ceremony, a short beach cleanup activity, and a visit to the village recycling center that Darmawan founded. Finally, we'll have a Balinese meal for lunch.

Darmawan will also discuss the theme of this experience—how he and his village are working to Keep Bali Beautiful. We will discuss the Balinese Hindu idea of Tri Hita Karena, which is harmony with nature, harmony with the community, and harmony with the Gods. We will learn how the introduction of plastic and modernism has diverted from the path of Tri Hita Karena and has created a major pollution problem for Bali and Tangkas Village. Finally, Darmawan will introduce how his village has come together to return to harmony with nature by launching a waste management and recycling program.
Other things to note
Wear comfortable clothing for the beach cleanup. We will meet at Darmawan's house in Tangkas Village. Drive time from Ubud is 45 mins, Kuta 1 hour 30 mins, Sanur 1 hour, and Candi Dasa 30 mins.

Hi, my name is Darmawan from Tangkas Village in eastern Bali. My family have been farmers here for five generations. I combine working on my family farm with my job as an agricultural expert for the regional government. I am married and have two young children. About five years ago, with the help of Keep Bali Beautiful, I launched a recycling program to solve the problem of plastic pollution that was harming my village. I hope you will come and join us for a tour of my village, meet the leaders of the village and have lunch with my family.

Tempat yang akan Anda datangi

We’ll begin at Pak Darmawan’s house in Tangkas Village, Klungkung. Tangkas is a farming village and Darmawan’s family has worked the land here for many generations. From here, we will take a short drive to the beachfront temple of Watu Klotok for a traditional Balinese ceremony, and a quick beach cleanup activity. Afterwards, we will return to the village to visit the recycling center that Darmawan founded, and finally have lunch at his house.

A really unique look at a traditional balinese village, and how they are addressing the global issue of us using way too much plastic, and what we can do about it. But it was a fun and special experience, not gloomy at all. Great personal hosts opened their house to us, fed us, and discussed the issues of reducing waste and making it work, in this village of 800 people. We went to a temple and did a cleansing ceremony and felt really included by the locals. Did a little bit of a clean up on the beach, then we saw the recycling centre in action. After that back to the house for a delicious Balinese lunch. I had a great time, and would recommend this tour to people who are interested in peeking behind the curtain and getting a glimpse of life in a Balinese village. And of course if you are interested in how to reduce waste and recycle. I loved it. Highly recommended!

I have been living in Bali for over seven months and this tour has been the absolute highlight of my stay so far. Keep Bali Beautiful are doing amazing and valuable work to reduce plastic pollution and this tour allows you to see the work up close and personal. Not only that, but you get to learn so much about the Balinese culture through conversations and participating in prayers at a temple. Komang, my driver and guide, was enthusiastic about helping me learn as much as I could and in answering any questions I had. The Balinese lunch provided was delicious and a perfect way to end a great day. The tour is a special and unique opportunity and by participating you are supporting the future of the valuable program.

Everyone is talking about the terrific plastic pollution of the planet these days. Especially Indonesia / Bali has become well-known for having trouble with their waste-management. I wanted to find out what the situation really is like at the base, in the villages, in people's life and was super interested right from the start to learn about the issues people deal with on an everyday level. The host Darmawan and his friend Komangg were absolutely welcoming all my questions and gave me a real deep insight in what they are dealing with and what are possible solutions for the situation. Darmawan has established a waste separation company, that helps with the recycling of the trash from his village. And while there are other initiatives like that on Bali, this one seems to run quite well due to the fact that with the AirBnB experience they get additional money to pay the workers. It was great to understand the issues Bali is facing in this regard at the moment and my hosts were exceptionally friendly, open and welcoming. I did enjoy the day not only as an educational excursion, but as a real encounter with Bali and it's warm people. Thank you Darmawan and Komangg. I recommend this experience highly. In fact everyone should take part to raise their own awareness for the issue.

This was a sweet experience. It was nice to go to the beach and pick up trash that helps make the earth more beautiful. My favorite part was the prayer ceremony before the pick-up. It was warm and felt lovely to embrace Balinese culture. The lunch was good, authentic Balinese food. Thank you for the hospitality!

This was easily one of the best parts of our vacation. The work they are doing is incredibly respectable & I pray they are able to continue to grow & make an impact. The pollution in Bali is horrendous, but this group of people are slowly changing that & spreading important information. My husband and I are so grateful for this experience because we gained lifelong friends, as well 🥰

What an amazing experience! As soon as I arrived at Darmawan's home I felt so warmly welcomed by them and the family! One can really feel the passion of Darmawan and Komang who guided me through the tour. The food was all homemade and wonderful and the insight I gained to the culture and traditions was more than I learned in the last 4 weeks while staying in Bali. We even participated in a ceremony in beautiful Klungkung after the tour! I can highly recommend this tour to everybody who is interested in sustainability and looking for a deep dive into a beautiful and not so touristic part of Bali!
