Learn about sake (a brewed rice drink) and shochu (a Japanese spirit) while tasting a diverse range of both traditional beverages. Some 53 ingredients can be used in the production of shochu, such as sweet potato, brown sugar, barley, rice, or buckwheat. Each one adds its own unique flavor and aroma to the distilled liquor. As we explore these differences, I’ll describe shochu’s history, production process, and cultural relevance.
We’ll do an equally deep dive into sake (which is made from fermented rice) to see how distinct and dynamic these two national drinks can be. I’ll also share tips on how to converse with bartenders and servers in my favorite bars and bottle shops in Tokyo. You’ll leave with new confidence when it comes to selecting shochu or sake from a menu.

This experience was so much more than what I could have expected. I went in knowing very little about sake and shochu and now I feel like I have more to learn and try and enjoy. The venue was incredible and I'd love to go back. Christopher was so interesting and knowledgeable, he made it such a memorable experience. I recommend this for literally everyone!

This is a must do if you have a spare night in Tokyo! The bar was really close to public transport and easy to find. We had such a great time tasting all the different Sake and Socho and even a few other liquors and spirits in the fridges - you’re able to sample anything you’re interested in (even if it just has a nice label!). Christopher is an excellent host and makes you feel at home, answers questions thoughtfully, and has a wealth of knowledge about the different spirits. We really enjoyed the night and so glad we chose this experience as it became the highlight of our trip. Highly recommend!

It was my first airbnb experience and Christopher set the bar really high for all that follows!! What a fun, engaging and educational evening with him. Not only did he share his expert knowledge of Sake and Shochu, he was also generously shared how life is like in Japan and other tips for visitors like me. I would sign up for this experience again when I am in Tokyo, it great fun!

Honestly, this was the highlight of our Tokyo trip. Chris was so lovely and knowledgeable and gracious! He struck a great balance between educating us on the nuances of sake and shochu, and just letting us have fun with the experience. Great value for money in terms of booze consumption, too! Chris was even kind enough to walk us through Golden Gai after the session concluded, and chatted with us well past our bedtimes! A great host and a great experience. Thanks Chris for looking after us so well!
