During his 27 years in apartheid prisons, Nelson Mandela formed close relationships not only with his fellow prisoners, but also with those tasked with keeping him behind bars. I'm one of them.

Tempat yang akan Anda datangi

We'll hop on a ferry and arrive from the V&A Waterfront at Robben Island, where former South African President Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of the 27 years he served behind bars before the fall of apartheid. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

UNFORGETTABLE!!! What an absolutely mind blowing experience spending time with a lovely man who had the pleasure of forming a special relationship with the legend that is Mandela. Spending time in the location where a prisoner became a president and where the new South Africa was born whilst receiving insight into the man who made it all happen. This was an incredibly rewarding experience which I will never forget!! I highly recommend this tour! Jack and his team were very attentive to my needs and I had an absolutely amazing day spending time with them!! Thank you so much!!

Well I didnt actually get to go on either tour with Jack. Robben Island closed due to COVID on the morning of our scheduled tour. Jack still met with me that morning and explained the situation. It was appreciated. My refund was promptly processed unlike another experience that I had scheduled the same week. I plan to go back again next year and try it all again. See you next year Jack?

Jack had a great story for every question we asked about Mr. Mandela. Getting to hear a first hand account of his final days in prison was unforgettable, especially the insights of how he kept his sense of humor. Both Jack and his driver were very nice and accommodating, we would highly recommend.

This was a truly unique experience. You can of course visit Robben Island on your own, but hearing Jack's stories of what it was like for him adds a whole other perspective. The visit to the house at the former Victor Verster Prison is something else altogether, and is really what sets this experience apart (you can book the house visit separately as well). Seeing the house where Nelson Mandela spent the last 14 months of his imprisonment and especially hearing Jack's stories who cooked for him during this time was fascinating. You'll hear stories you won't find anywhere else. The house itself is not open to the public, so it's a real privilege to be able to visit.

This is truly a once in a lifetime experience - having access to the place where Mandela was released from and personal insights/funny stories from Jack. I would highly recommend and would add that if although it is not cheap, it is worth every penny, and includes a lovely lunch at Waterfront as well as transport (all on top of the experience and information you are getting from Jack). Both Jack and his driver/co-host were very friendly and made you feel at ease quickly, able to ask questions without hesitation.

Have you wondered how Nelson Mandela was able to become President of the Country that had kept him in prison for 27 years? Told by two very different people, this experience is definitely for you. Jack is Caucasian. He worked closely with Mr Mandela most days during the 18 months before Nelson was released from prison. As one of South Africa’s first coloured train drivers, Owen witnessed much of what was unjust about apartheid. And he shares his experiences so eloquently. There are a few things you should know before booking. Most important of all, Jack doesn’t do politics. Nelson Mandela respected Jack for this and you should too! If you want the low-down on apartheid, then this experience is not for you. If you are looking for larger than life Holywood dramatics told by professional tour guides, then this is not for you either. But if you are looking to meet and talk with the last of Mandela’s prison officers still alive, then this most definitely is for you. The experience is good value for money too. 100% of the money goes to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, a non-profit organisation focused on memory, dialogue and legacy work, founded by Mr Mandela in 1999. Highly recommended.
