Hiding in the back alleys and graffiti-covered streets of London's trendy Shoreditch district are 700 hundred years of history waiting to be explored. We’ll visit the site of England’s first mental health hospital, founded in 1247, discover why French Huguenots made London their home in 1685, and relive the horrors of Jack the Ripper in 1888. We’ll grab a bite to eat at a 120-year-old bagel shop and snack on a sweet treat made with cardamom and nuts from a local Indian deli. This is a walking tour like no other, offering a unique reflection on the patterns of history with commentary and insights on how these patterns continue to influence the lives of Londoners today, while enjoying the foods, fashion, and bursting creativity of one London’s most bustling districts.
Other things to note
Dress prepared for the weather and bring a camera. You’ll need a day travel card for Zone 1-2. Snacks are not provided but there will be plenty of opportunity to stop for refreshments.

I'm a writer, artist, storyteller, and history enthusiast and I’ve been living in East London for 15 years. Being an immigrant myself, the stories of those coming to London through the ages in search of their fortune have always intrigued me. It's a story that continues today and it's one I want to share with you. Hopefully it will make you fall in love with this city as I did.

We’ll enjoy a jam-packed five-hour walk. Highlights include Artillery Lane, Spitalfields Market, Brick Lane, and the Huguenot houses of Fournier Street. We’ll also admire the Battle of Cable Street mural before reaching our final stop where we'll enjoy a farewell drink.

Super day looking at a part of London I had never explored or even thought about much. An eclectic selection of social history over the centuries right up to the present. Francois was prompt friendly conversational and wholly original. A really worthwhile experience.

While I have lived in London for 1.5 years and been to the East End various times, Francois succeeded in adding a whole different layer to the place, i.e. made us see things with new eyes. His tour was packed with storytelling (given the freezing and windy conditions I was afraid he would lose his voice, so much did he have to share, but he kept it up to the end!). It was a wonderful blend of history, facts and anecdotes, socio-economic development over the centuries, particular about the issue of justice, which were very dear to him and us alike. We really liked him bringing along many old photos, so we could stand in a location and see how it must have been in times long past. Very mindful! And lastly, he spiced it up with many fun little stories, so it was entertaining on top! Really well done, worth every penny and every minute!

Fantastic experience! Francois was incredibly knowledgeable and a passionate storyteller. It felt more like an old friend was showing us around his city rather than a tour. We’d go again in a heartbeat!

This was, hands down, one of the best tours that I have ever been on. Francois has a deep passion for the history of London, from the Roman period to the present. He shows us areas that are hidden in plain sight that I would have just walked by. He also plans nice stops, such as a stop for tea, to ensure that guests don’t get too tired. His tour was the highlight of my visit to London.

Man, what a day we had! We learned SO much about Shoreditch‘s dreary history and Fancois was so well able to connect the dots and link them to recent political events. Two hours into the tour, my Mom and I already felt considerably smarter then we had when he had gotten up that morning but also slightly more exhausted with the human race on the whole. So the lovely tea and cake break was very much appreciated and well placed in between. Also, getting a snack on brick lane market was a masterful move, I so enjoyed that! I recommend this tour to everyone who enjoys history or politics or just a good story really and wants to spend the day with a lovely, smart, knowledgeable person right hyah in London. ;) DO plan something light for the evening though, as it takes a bit of time for the head (and heart) to recover. My mom and I ended the day with a tea ceremony, which was perfect. Thank you Francois, really, so much!
