Five minute drive (2 k) Pipers Lagoon Beach and the much photographed Shack Island. Pipers features scenic trails with ocean viewpoints making it a perfect place to enjoy sunrises and sunsets. Built on an isthmus that extends out to a rocky headland, this 8 hectare park features twisting trails that lead to a number of seaside lookouts. From the headland you'll have a great view of historic Shack Island
Pipers Lagoon is an ideal bird watching retreat. Seagulls, sandpipers, horned grebes, loons, kingfishers, oyster catchers and great blue herons a just some of the varieties of bird life.
It's also a great spot for beachcombing year round and in the summer some hardy folks (me included) even swim here.
Five minute drive (2 k) to Departure Bay beach. At low tide the ocean recedes revealing a massive beach to explore with many species of marine life exposed like crabs, star fish, jelly fish and more.
Activities enjoyed at the beach include swimming, beachcombing and sightseeing. The beach is also a beach launch site for kayakers looking to explore the coastline. There are islands along the coastline worth exploring like Newcastle, Jesse, Snake and Brandon Islands.
Eight minute drive to Neck Point Waterfront Park that is recognized as an environmentally sensitive area and is well known in the community for its historic, scenic and natural features and provides visitors with 36 acres of a waterfront setting to explore. Visitors will find rugged rock cliffs, with pebble bay beaches, and winding trails through Garry Oak groves. The park is a great location for photographers wanting to capture the essence of Nanaimo and the west coast lifestyle.
The park is also popular with scuba divers as an access road allows for drive up diving. Divers tell tales of an impressive array of sea life off the rocky headlands at the end of the parks namesake 'neck'. There is a deep water rock wall face that is reportedly home to a friendly octopus.
The headland area in the north section of the park is a great spot to watch for Orca and Sea lions and otters. During herring season the beach is awash with the row (January).
