The Ark is a postindustrial farmouse at Food Field, a 4-acre urban farm in central Detroit. This cozy shipping container house includes a loft bed, couch, small kitchen and shower and sits off the grid with 100% solar power and wood heat.
Get out into nature while staying just 5-10 minutes from downtown Detroit! The Ark is surrounded by four acres of urban farmland where the pheasants are the loudest annoyances around. The 200-square-foot shipping container house is heated by a wood stove and powered by solar panels, and includes a loft bed that fits 1-2, couch, kitchen & living area, stereo, refrigerator, wifi, hot shower plus an outdoor composting toilet. Outside, guests can also hang out with our chickens, ducks and emus, relax on the rooftop deck, or soak in the greenhouse wood-fired hot tub. This is a great place to experience a different side of the city but a poor choice for those looking for air conditioning and cable TV.
Guests will have use of the house for the full length of their stay, and are welcome to explore the rest of the farm, get involved in the garden or relax in the hammock. Be aware that farm work goes on daily and we may not be able to host on days we have public events.

We are available as needed to introduce guests to the space, and are happy to help visitors get to know the city or leave you on your own, as you prefer.

*Electricity: Our power currently runs on an off-grid solar system and batteries have recently begun weakening. We are looking into an upgrade but until then power is likely to run out overnight or during dark/rainy weather (though everything should run normally during the day)
Visitors should respect the space and follow all directions for use of amenities. Safety is important for using the wood stove, propane heat, etc. Will you have any issues with accessing the loft bed or using the composting outhouse? If not then you will enjoy your stay! Ask us if you have questions about bringing extra people or pets.
