The Arches is an attractive stone barn conversion providing excellent self-catering holiday cottage accommodation, perfect for cosy country evenings in front of a roaring log burning stove.
The Arches is an attractive stone barn conversion providing excellent self-catering holiday cottage accommodation. The Arches lies within the heart of the picturesque village of Otterburn. Otterburn is situated on the edge of the Northumberland National Park on the A696, being a perfect overnight stop for those en-route to and from Scotland and for guests attending the various wedding venues at Woodhill Hall ( approximately 1 mile) and Otterburn Castle Hotel (approximately 300 metres). This charming two-storey cottage, comprises a one master bedroom with a king size bedroom and feature beams to the ceiling with an ensuite shower room to the first floor. To the ground floor living area there is a fully equipped solid oak kitchen with a spacious dining area, perfect for entertaining. Leading of the open plan kitchen there is a wood burner within the living area which is perfect for cosy country evenings in front of a roaring fire. The Arches forms part of the owners larger property ‘Sunnybrae’ but is completely self-contained providing an ideal base for those wishing to explore the unspoiled and historic landscapes of Northumbria. Although the Arches is a one bedroom cottage, it does however have the facilities to sleep more upon request. Well behaved pets are welcome! Accommodation Details Ground floor: Kitchen/dining room with oven, microwave, washing machine and fridge freezer. Living room with wood burner, freeview TV and DVD. Toilet. First floor: Bedroom With double bed, travel cot available. Outside: Courtyard with table and chairs. Fuel, Oil CH and gas hob. Parking for The Arches is to the side of the property, this area is shared, so any issues with blocking cars in then please contact us. The house can be accessed directly by guests, who are given a code to a key box on the outside of the house. We are always available to guests by phone, text or email. If you would like to meet up for a chat about what's available locally I would be happy to call in if I'm around, but generally I would leave you to enjoy the house without interruption. The neighbourhood is peaceful, the silence only broken by the sound of birds both wild and domesticated and the odd vocal sheep. The domesticated variety of bird are actually very well behaved and with the absence of any male testosterone in the flock there is no rude awakening as the sun rises! The hens also lay the tastiest eggs in a variety of colours and if they are laying when you stay, we will endeavour to put some in the kitchen for your enjoyment. Ideally your own car is the best way to get around. There are buses that run to Jedburgh and Newcastle but are fairly infrequent. Otterburn does however provide a good base point for walkers and cyclists looking to explore the Northumberland countryside. Otterburn Castle and the Border Reiver village shop (which stocks virtually anything and everything) are easily accessed on foot from the property. We will provide one basket full of logs for the wood burner. We will also provide some essentials, such as tea, coffee and sugar. Please just ask us for further information prior to your stay as we will try to accommodate for all guests as best that we can.

  • Excellent place to stay in gorgeous Northumberland. We arrived late to milk in the fridge, a bottle of wine and fresh eggs from the hens. Decorated to an excellent standard. We will be back....very soon. Many thanks for a great stay.

  • I stayed at the Arches for a weekend with my partner and we had an absolutely lovely time. The cottage is immaculate and exactly as described. The little touches like a bottle of wine upon arrival and milk in the fridge were so thoughtful. The kitchen is well equipped and the cottage a really comfortable place to stay. I'd thoroughly recommend staying here. Overall, we had a lovely weekend - thank you Amy and Scott!

  • Very comfortable spacious cottage. A great base for exploring Northumberland. The weather wasn't the best during our stay but the comfy sofas and cosy surroundings meant we didn't really care. We enjoyed the wine and fresh eggs Amy kindly left for us.

  • We really enjoyed a long weekend at Amy's cute little cottage. It's got everything you could possibly need- including prosecco, eggs and milk in the fridge! We also really enjoyed the log burner on a chilly evening. The cottage is furnished immaculately. And the local area is absolutely stunning as you drive down to the cottage. I'd highly recommend staying here!

A cosy cottage bedroom at Larriston Farm - a mid 19th century farm steading around a cobbled courtyard. We're 10 minutes' drive from Kielder and Newcastleton, in a very rural setting amongst fields, woods, hills and rivers. Dogs welcome (provided they like our two Border Collies Pip and Meg, and our cat - although they can find somewhere to hide!). We offer breakfast and you're welcome to use the kitchen to cook an evening meal. We have two double rooms - check our other listing too.
We are very close to Kielder observatory - its about a ten minute drive
Larriston Farm is set in 28 acres of with its own stretch of river. Larriston itself is 2,500 acres of fell, tracks, Barn owls, forest, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and more, stretching right up to the border with England. All of it is accessible for walks and exploring on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Being right on the edge of the Kielder Dark Skies Reserve, there are some stunning views of the stars and Milky Way.
  • Larriston Farm was perfect for my needs. I was attending a star-gazing event at the nearby Kielder Observatory. I was met by my hosts and immediately made welcome with a coffee which was perfect after a fairly long drive from down south. There were other guests and it was all very congenial. My room was really comfortable. It was a shared bathroom which was large and had everything a person would need. I got back quite late as it was a star-gazing event but that was no problem for the hosts. Breakfast was continental style and again perfect for my needs. There are animals in the house (which suited me: two dogs Megan and Pip and a cat called Mr Whitey). All in all a nice stay. Thank you guys.

  • Comfortable room and lovely house, with friendly hosts! Always ready to pop the kettle on and have a chat - would recommend. And a great location for the observatory!

  • Our stay was marked by an extraordinary welcome and sense of hospitality, including from the dogs. The farm is remote, quiet, a very comfortable retreat.

  • Everything was great including the flexibility on dates as we accidentally booked the wrong one... oops! But it was not a problem which was very kind. Lovely people, room, and animals too, wish you all the best. Cody and Lauren x

The Comb is a converted border farm set in the heart of the Northumberland Dark Sky Park that comfortably sleeps 20 set in 60 acres of its own grounds. Ideal for 4-6 families or a group of friends. The late 1700's converted border farm has 10 bedrooms all spacious with en suite, a large country kitchen, bar & large lounge, TV/ games room, dining room with capacity for 30+, bar terrace, dark skies balcony and games available. Surrounded by beautiful walks and cycle rides.
The country Kitchen, complete with log burning stove, is fully equipped with fridge/freezer, range cooker, microwave and all the equipment you will need for your group. There is freezer and laundry shed if required. There is also TV in the TV/ Games room. The bar is warm and inviting with an extended large lounge. All the bedrooms are spacious with wooden floors, each with its own en suite plus a view of the surrounding beauty from every room. There are 4 king size beds and the remainder are single beds with a family room offering a fun mezzanine layer for the children.
The Comb sits at the end of the road at the top of the picturesque Tarset valley. The Tarset valley follows the Tarset burn from its source in the wild hills on the Scottish border down to where it flows into North Tyne below Greenhaugh. This is a step into a time gone by, like the living set of a Roald Dahl novel. Much of the valley is in the Northumberland National Park before rising to Kielder Forest and then eventually to the wilderness of the hills and moors on the Scottish border. This is land of old stone farms, thick walled peel towers, castles and bastles with light shimmering border burns banked by matures woods, grasslands and meadows. The tapestry of colours are painted by the seasons and it is home to deer, foxes, badgers, hares, buzzards, owls, rabbits and even the Sidwood red squirrels. The Tarset valley is in Greysteads and Tarset which is one of the country's largest Parishes but with one of the smallest populations.  A friendly mix of farmers, shepherds, artists, locals and newer arrivals, what the population lacks in number its make up for in character. They frequent the Hollybush Inn a traditional drovers pub with spectacular views from the beer garden and a cozy open fire. The area sits in the heart of Northumberland Dark Sky Park boasting a breathtaking panorama of horizon to horizon stars with The Comb having the darkest skies of all, think African safari nights. Tarset is Border Reivers country, steeped in the history of the fierce clan system of the region. It offers a high concentration of Peel Towers and Bastles. On the many walks, bike rides or even quad bike safaris you can explore the old hidden trials and tread in the footsteps of these original outlaws. Sitting between the Rede Valley to the east (Otterburn and Carter Bar) and the North Tyne Valley (Kielder Water) to the West, the Tarset Valley is off the tourist track. Friendly, pretty this is valley with something for most.
  • The house was even better than the photos and Pat was very helpful on arrival and checkout. Thanks

  • Ideal for get togethers. Brilliant standard of finish to all the rooms. Very well kitted out for catering. Beautiful location and help nearby if any issues. Couldn't have asked for better.

  • Thoroughly recommended! Thanks to Pat and the team for making us really welcome. The house had everything we needed with lots of space and in such a beautiful spot. It was a great base for lovely walking trails through the valley and great space around the house to enjoy the outdoors. The house has fantastic entertaining space with a nice big kitchen and dinning area where we could all get together. The terraces were a great surprise with fab views in the mornings and the bar was great for the evenings!

    Lizzie2017-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • We booked the Comb for a birthday weekend for my dad's 80th birthday. Accommodation was absolutely perfect as some of our party can't manage stairs very well, so were able to have accessible rooms on ground floor. All rooms tastefully decorated and very clean and all en suite. We were made most welcome by Pat who gave us the whistle stop tour. Communal areas are great with plenty of space for relaxing. Kitchen well equipped and we had the fabulous Jackie cook for us over the weekend - can thoroughly recommend! Lots to do in the house - games etc. and surroundings ideal for walking and exploring. Kielder Sports offer a range of activities in the next field up and we very much enjoyed an archery session. Stargazing is a must and there's a well located viewing platform - highlight of our trip. A most memorable stay for a special occasion.

    Sandra2017-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic house to host a party for friends or family. Huge dining room which made an excellent "Great Hall" for our Harry Potter themed party. Bar large enough for disco and ceilidh dancing. All rooms having on suite bathrooms was great and kitchen very well equipped. Nothing too much trouble for the owners who answered emails promptly and were extremely welcoming.

    Joyce2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • We booked The Comb Dark Skies towards the end of its renovation phase (and at short notice) as a farewell bid to our brother who is moving abroad. Having only seen few exterior, interior photos (these have been updated online since) and researching the area, I contacted Mr Reivers to enquire. The communication was great and accommodating so we decided to book it with a bit of faith that the place was going to look good. Well, the place was well beyond our expectations!! Absolutely amazing scenery, an abundance of natural beauty and zero light pollution. With 60 acres of land, there were plenty of walking trails, plenty to see and enjoy. The property has been renovated to an excellent standard with spacious bedrooms, rain showers, a grand dining room enough for 20+, games room including a smart TV and a fire pit. All in all, we would love to return (perhaps on an annual basis). The agent was a Geordie lad who made sure we had everything we needed, was very friendly and added to the fun. Our stay was perfect and highly recommended. Harj Singh

  • Absolutely wonderful home in a fabulous peaceful location. Perfect for exploring Kielder and surrounding areas. We planned our stay around a visit to the observatory which was only 15mins drive away. Mark and Alan were brilliant hosts and made us very welcome as did their gorgeous Border Collies, Pip and Meg. Our room was clean, comfortable, spacious and cosy with tasteful decor. We enjoyed our stay and hope to return in the future to see how Mark and Alan progress with the renovation of the other buildings on the farmstead, obviously a labour of love.

  • Perfect for Kielder Observatory - we saw Jupiter and its moons. Mark was very welcoming and generous with his time. Mark's home is picturesque and secluded, with walks from the front door. We plan to return.

  • We had a comfortable and peaceful stay at Mark's place. It was cosy, neat and relaxing to be in. Mark is a friendly host and we enjoyed chatting in the kitchen. There was a carafe of water and glasses in our room when we arrived which was a nice touch.

  • We stayed as hubby was running in Kielder so came with our baby and little dog Dijon. Our pooch is normally shy of big dogs but Meg & Pip were so friendly and accepting. They (plus the cat) even came on a walk with us and played the whole way. I should probably say how awesome the hosts are too but that goes without saying! Thank you so much for having us and being so laid back. You made travelling away with a baby more relaxing and fun. I'm sorry we spilled so much stuff at breakfast! :) We will be back can't wait to see how things develop!

The lodge was very clean and beautifully presented with lots of space and gorgeous views of the river. My daughter enjoyed looking for their pet red squirrel in the gazebo. Rural retreat for couples and singles in the Rulewater Countryside - an airy private room with its own entrance in the countryside of the Scottish Borders, next to a flowing river and rolling hills.
We offer a private room in an enclosed courtyard on a quiet rural farm. It lends itself well to single individuals or couples looking for a rural retreat, especially to writers or artists looking for some scenic inspiration, road cyclists, mountain bikers, bikepackers, backpackers or walkers. The farm is in a beautiful setting next to a river and pond, with walks nearby in woodlands or the country roads. Walking distance to the village of Bonchester Bridge (about a mile and a half) which has a cosy pub for meals, and about twenty minutes drive to the town of Hawick for supermarkets, a stay here will offer you a slower pace of life to relax and unwind. We have our own stretch of river if you want to try some wild swimming, though we're not responsible for the temperature! (or for anything else related to this sport). Hot water bottles available on request! The room is a separate ground floor unit next to our house with its own entrance, with two steps into the room. It has a double bed and a sofa bed so can accommodate 2 - 4 people. It has a further sofa, a large desk with view over the fields, wardrobe, weights machine, kitchen area with kettle, toaster and microwave.
The farm is quiet and private in a rural location. Walks nearby include Forestry Commission tracks, Bonchester Hill, Ruberslaw. Mountain bikers will relish discovering the quiet forestry tracks in the area for a new adventure. Please visit my site rulewater dot co dot uk to see what is on offer in our area.
  • I stayed here for a night while cycling. It's a beautiful peaceful area for cycling, walking or just relaxing and there is a lovely village pub just a sort cycle away. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful without being intrusive. The room was spacious and had a feeling of calm with a window looking out over the fields. I don't usually stay anywhere that doesn't have an en suite but because the family were so friendly it wasn't a problem, there are also lots of friendly animals around which I loved! I would definitely stay again.

  • The apartment is absolutely beautiful. So unusual, elegant and quite breathtaking with its amazing views. There were additional supplies that we didn't expect like binoculars, star charts and torch which really did make a difference. We had a lovely time and didn't want to leave. We didn't get to meet mary although she made it clear that she was on hand if we needed her and was only a text or email away. We will definitely be returning to the Stargazer apartment. Fabulous thank you.

  • The apartment is lovely, a peaceful get away from it all with nice little extras like binoculars to look at the beautiful scenery and wildlife, and if you're lucky enough to get clear night skies the stars are amazing. Mary was available if needed but gave us privacy. The conservatory is lovely to relax in and there are two outdoor seating areas. The apartment is well equipped and very spacious for two, we loved our stay.

The shower room is equipped with shampoo/shower gel, soap and hand lotion and all towels. To the front is a wooden porch - a lovely warm place to enjoy a drink and watch the world go by. You have sole use of the cottage. There's a back garden for you and a front porch too. If you arrive by motorbike or other precious transport we can usually provide you with secure (alarmed) garage space on site. Otherwise there is ample parking at the front of the cottage. We live next door. We will be there to meet you and on hand whenever you would like local knowledge or suggestions. Hugh is an off road driving instructor and can provide training and driving experiences at his site - just ask for more information or search online for Farx4. Lindsay is a textile and paper artist with a workroom adjacent to the cottage. She offers hand spinning tuition as well as dyeing and selling indigo yarns and lots more textile goodies. Our two dogs Ash and Midge live with us, usually in front of the log burning stove... There's great walking from the door (and maps in the cottage). This area is known for its mountain biking and there are 7Stanes bike centres not too far away as well as local trails. We have guides in the cottage to help you decide where to explore. Equally the built heritage is impressive. So many of the small border towns have magnificent ruined abbeys, old mill buildings and some fantastic textile shopping. There are many local museums and galleries and a vibrant artist/artisan community. We'd be only too happy to talk about our talented friends and direct you to their workshops! If you fancy travelling further afield it's a little over an hour to Edinburgh or Newcastle or Carlisle.
We are located in a tiny village which has NO amenities in the way of public transport (apart from school buses) nor are there shops, post office, pub. However this rural bliss is only three miles from a pub, and seven miles from Jedburgh with its independent butchers and bakers, pubs and restaurants, and small supermarket. Next nearest is Denholm, an attractive wee village with pubs, a shop, restaurant and cafes. Hawick at ten miles, has a wider range of everything! There is NO wifi in the cottage - the signal strength is very low in this area, and we struggle even with signal boosters. Mobile signals can be very patchy too.
  • Very nice cottage with comfortable bed. We all enjoyed our stay

  • This is a beautiful cottage in an idyllic location (despite being very rainy during our stay!) Lindsay was very welcoming, we loved the homemade shortbread and the thoughtful jug of milk in the fridge. Our only regret is not booking for a longer stay!

    Natasha2015-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • The host canceled this reservation 9 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.

  • Lindsay was very welcoming and there were even freshly made scones awaiting us upon our arrival. The accomodation was warm, comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. Despite it being almost July we took advantage of the log fire as we were cold and damp after a day walking around Kielder.

  • We very much enjoyed staying here! The cottage is situated in beautiful countryside in a very quiet spot of Scotland. It was clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated with furniture and art from local crafters and nice fireplace to warm yourself at! The owners live next doors and are very nice and accommodating. They also prepared some food for us which was unexpected and very nice! Would definitely visit again!

  • Lovely little cottage in a very quiet village. Perfect if you want to get away from it all, in particular the Internet. Lindsay is the perfect host, popping in to check if everything is ok then leaving you undisturbed the rest of the time. The cottage is equipped with pretty much everything you need for your stay, including firewood for the lovely log fire. If you feel the cold then make sure you take lots of jumpers as it is an old building and we found it took a while to warm up on the first night. Great value for money and some lovely little touches, including Lindsay's artwork around the cottage, and even a wee library with some carefully selected Scottish titles.

  • What a beautiful cottage and peaceful location. Not far from some lovely forest walks that we drove too and some beautiful surrounding towns. The cottage was very homely and we were welcomed with all we needed including amazing home made biscuits, bread and milk. Everyone should stay here! Thank you guys.

  • Just back from a wonderful few days at the Old Tea Room Cottage! Lindsay's communication before our arrival was lovely & informative. The cottage has a great atmosphere, is beautifully decorated & well stocked with all the usual kitchen essentials & toiletries. We had fruit scones to welcome us, which were very yummy. Our aim for our break was to switch off, relax & recharge! It was just the perfect place to do this, beautiful log fire & quiet garden. We totally loved our time at the cottage & hope to be back again.

Westmains Farm is ideally located for a peaceful, relaxing holiday at any time of year. Newly renovated in contemporary style and with its own Hot Tub, the cottage will appeal to families looking to explore north Cumbria including the northern Lake District, Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.
The local Bridge Inn at Penton provides delicious food and a warm Cumbrian welcome after a day exploring or fishing. Alternatively the Scottish village of Newcastleton, some 5 miles away, provides more places to eat and drink in the local area. The former farmhouse has a most picturesque setting overlooking the Liddel Valley on the English side of the border some 30 minutes drive north east of Carlisle. The newly refurbished, contemporary style ‘shooting lodge’ sits in an idyllic, rural, location with woodland aspect and the benefit of three quarters of a mile of salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Liddel with an additional three named pools.

  • Great house in a great location with a huge bathroom and amazing views. The postcode did take us to someone else's property however after asking for directions we found the farm further along the road. The hot tub temperature did start to automatically go down from 7pm, not happy about this as sometimes we did not get back from walking till after 7pm. I would stay here again, but maybe not pay the extra for the use of the "hot" tub, the bath is pretty big.

The cottage is situated in Bellingham, within walking distance of all the town’s amenities (17 miles from Hexham), in the heart of the North Tyne valley. An exquisite base (with consistently high reviews) for exploring the tranquil local landscapes, by foot or wheel, close to the River North Tyne (fishing permits available) and the Dark Sky park and Kielder observatory.
The cottage has two bedrooms, one has a single bed and one a twin which can be zipped together to create a superking bed. There is a kitchen equipped with toaster, dishwasher. electric oven, microwave and kettle. The lounge is large and includes a dining table and TV. The bathroom has a bath and shower over the bath, it also includes a washing machine and tumble drier. The back of the cottage overlooks fields. There is a shed in the garden in which bikes can be stored or, if they need locking away that can be arranged too.
The town is the capital of the North Tyne, it has a butchers shop, a newsagent, a bakers, a chemist, three pubs and is in an area renown for natural beauty. The whole area has wonderful dark skies and there are two observatories within 10 miles of the cottage. There is a local golf club which welcomes day visitors.

  • The cottage is beautiful. Loved the welcoming touches like beautiful flowers and pastries. It was much larger than we expected and a lovely place to be. We were sorry to stay there for such a short time. Norma was very helpful and welcoming. We really appreciated her as a host

  • Brilliant weekend in a wonderful cottage with a lovely warm welcome. Location is perfect for Kielder, Hadrian's Wall and further afield, whilst Bellingham has pretty much everything you might need. The cottage was spotlessly clean, comfortable and very well equipped ensuring a relaxing stay and great night's sleep. Norma was most helpful and communication all round was brilliant. Couldn't ask for more and would heartily recommend to anyone. Looking forward to staying again in the future!

  • A lovely place in a great location, just a shame we were only there one night! A number of extra supplies were provided by Norma on our arrival which were very welcome, and the food at the hotel opposite was excellent. Would be a great place to be based for exploring the local area on foot or by car, with Hexham and lots of other local sites within easy reach. House was exactly as described and wouldn't hesitate to stay again if in the same area.

  • What a beautiful cottage! We booked here so that we could visit Kielder Observatory and we couldn't have booked a nicer place. It was in a lovely location and was clean, cosy and comfortable! We had a lovely meal at the hotel over the road and walked up to the magical Hareshaw Linn. Norma could not be a better host, she was friendly and inviting, and not only left us with lots of information, but also some delicious pastries, bread and cereals :). Thank you Norma!

Situated in the very heart of Bellingham town square and within walking distance of an extensive range of local amenities, pubs and restaurants. A sumptuous and traditionally furnished en-suite bedroom leads down to a modern, stylish and fully equipped kitchen and dining area adjacent to a cosy lounge.
Bellingham is the gateway village to the entire Northumberland National Park. You will be ideally located to visit an array of historical places and attractions such as Hadrian's Wall. You will be on the doorstep of the Kielder Water and Forest and the famous dark skies observatory. The Pennine Way national trail passes right past Milburn Cottage and there are many other walking and cycling paths in the immediate area. Although a Bellingham is a rural village it does host some excellent places to eat and drink, has an excellent Co-op convenience store, a butcher, a baker, an outdoor and country store, a post-office - practically everything you are likely to need.
  • Great location, very comfortable accommodation, ideal for a short beeak in a beautiful area.

  • We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Old Workshop and can not fault it in any way! Our trip was a birthday surprise from my other half and as soon as we opened the door, I knew I couldn't have booked anywhere better. The house is the perfect size for 2 people and has so much character! The bed was so comfortable and we spent one of our evenings with the fire on and a home cooked steak from the butchers a couple of doors away. Although the village is remote, we were at Kielder Water and Wark in 30 minutes maximum and with so much to do and explore just around the corners (such as the waterfall walk) we wish that we'd have stayed longer Check-in was so simple and the communication from Maxine was brilliant. We are aiming to travel back for darker skies later in the year and this will without doubt be out number one option for accommodation.

  • Very luxurious! The bed was to die for! Very powerful shower which was great! Still cant believe how much they have managed to fit in such a small space! There is the normal things like a hob, kettle, toaster etc but then they have even managed to fit in an oven, washing machine, microwave and even a hoover and airer! Its bigger than it looks in the picture. Great location for reaching places like Kielder. Spoke to Maxine before we left and she was lovely. If we had any questions I wouldn't have hesitated to ask!

    Heather2017-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely little cottage for a couple's break. It's clean, easy to find and in the perfect location for exploring Northumberland. It's 30 minutes from kielder forest or hadrian's wall and we also went a bit further afield to Alnwick castle and lindisfarne - well worth a visit!

This charming former coaching inn is an excellent venue for family and group celebrations, with versatile rooms, table tennis, pool table, darts, giant Wii, cinema screen, fully functioning barand library. Rural location. Sleeps 19 in beds with an additional double sofa bed and single put up bed. We have started accepting 1 night bookings during the week in standard charging seasons depending on our other commitments, so please feel free to enquire about this option.
Mosspaul is steeped in Borders history and tradition and is itself a landmark on the road from Edinburgh to Carlisle. It is set in miles of beautiful rural countryside, where sheep farming is the main source of income. The house has recorded history as a coaching inn dating from the 17th century and was either a monastery or chapel before that called St Paul's on the Moss. It has played host to famous visitors and colourful local characters over the years and most local people could tell you a story or two about it. We chose to live here as the rural setting suits us (and our dogs!) and we fell in love with the old Inn on sight. Mosspaul has its own working bar, a sitting room with log burner and a multipurpose media room with 11 foot screen for cinema, TV Freesat, DVD and Wii, table tennis or dining for up to 28. The house has 2 double rooms ensuite, 1 bedroom with 2 double bunks ensuite, 1 double ensuite with an adjoining room with a triple bunk, 1 bunk room with a double shower room, and 2 triple bunks. Bed linen is provided, but not bath and hand towels. The house is rented as a whole so guests have exclusive use of the facilities.
Mosspaul is situated on the boundary between the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway, set in beautiful, but sometimes wild farm and moorland. The region has its own unique history and culture that differs from town to town. You will find excellent hill walking on the doorstep, and fishing, shooting, cycling, great roads for motorbikes, horseriding, quirky villages, museums, stately homes, forbidding castles, abbeys and shopping all close by. It is also an ideal place to kick back and relax away from the bustle of everyday life. There are festivals all year round, such as the Denholm Folk Festival and the Borders Book Festival. Possibly the most famous are the Border Common Ridings which take place each summer. This historic event dates back centuries and is still the main event of the year in each town. The people of the towns take to horseback and ride the borders of each area, just as they did many years ago when they kept them safe and secure from neighbouring thieves of livestock and land. There are two rideouts to Mosspaul itself taking place in late May every year. Please check the dates with the owners if you wish to visit at this time. Shops and supermarkets in Langholm (17kms) and Hawick (21kms) should cater for all your needs while you stay at Mosspaul. Mosspaul is set on the high point between the Teviot Valley to the west and the Ewes Valley to the East. We are 10 miles from Langholm and 13 miles from Hawick in an area of peaceful and thriving farm and moorland just by the source of the river Teviot. There are many walks right on the doorstep, and you can attempt the three Mosspaul Marilyns direct from the hotel without having to step into a car. Within easy reach by car are walking for all abilities, water sports at Keilder Water and off road cycling at both 7 Stanes and Craik Forrest. If you are more interested in history, both Hawick and Langholm have museums and Hermitage Castle, Bowhill and Abbotsford, to name a few, are all within easy reach.
  • Stayed at Mosspaul for a stag do, and had a great time. Alison made it all so easy. It didn't matter what we asked, it wasn't a problem. All the guys enjoyed pouring their own pints, and I enjoyed using the big kitchen to make a feast. There were probably times when we got pretty noisy. But that wasn't a problem as Alison and Eddie are on site, which is reassuring, but in a separate residence. Mosspaul is very remote, but as it's on the a7, there's easy access to transport. The x95 bus stops right outside. We would definitely stay at Mosspaul again!

    Paul2016-05-09T00:00:00Z
  • We were 15 lads on a stag and would stretch anyone's patience but Alison & Eddie were great and spent much of their own personal time helping us out and keeping us safe. Really fun place to spend a weekend!

    Mark2017-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great time at Mosspaul. Lots for our party to enjoy. Large cinema (I've been in smaller multiplex cinemas) which is perfect to enjoy a movie or play the Wii, which is also included. Kitchen has everything you will need to cater for your party. I made chili and curry for 21. Pots and range more than ample to allows to cook. Bar is well stocked with glasses. Everyone took turn serving behind the bar. Great fun. We used all of the bedrooms for our guests. All slept well and enjoyed a massive breakfast the following morning. I now think I can run my own B&B, surely it can't always be this fun. Highly recommend.

  • Alison and her Husband were excellent Hosts who took care of our every need in the build up to and during our stay at Mosspaul. The house exceeded our expectations and provided a wonderful location for myself and 15 friends to spend a memorable weekend! The House is located in a beautifully remote location however there is no shortage of things to do whilst staying at Mosspaul, Pool, Table Tennis, a fully operational private bar, Nintendo Wii, 4 meter TV Screen (and Conversion/Drop Goal practice facilities) left us with no shortage of things to do during our stay. The whole house was immaculately clean and well presented. The fantastic restaurant standard kitchen was a joy to cook in. Thank you very much for having us and for the recommendations of things to do during our stay! We hope to be back next year!

    Phillip2014-12-01T00:00:00Z

  • A group of 13 of us stayed at Mosspaul and had a fantastic weekend. It is well equipped for large groups - the bar, pool table and table tennis were all great. The bedrooms were all nice and comfy and catering kitchen was well equipped. We had a nice walk up the hill behind the house. Alison and her husband were very helpful and not concerned about us making noise, even late on into the night. We all highly recommend Mosspaul!

    Jessica2015-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Mosspaul was an absolutely fantastic venue to celebrate our friend’s 30th birthday. There were 20 in our group, aged between 25-35, and similarly to some previous reviewers we were looking for somewhere to let our hair down as well as being close to beautiful scenery. Alison was a brilliant host, she made us feel very welcome and took care to show & tell us everything we needed to know. Although her flat is in the house, she reassured us that we couldn’t disturb her and encouraged us to turn the music up as much as we wanted in the living room and bar area. As we were leaving, she even said that she had been impressed with our partying stamina - so she clearly didn’t mind us loitering on the doorstep, still up from the night before, as she left for her morning jobs! The bar was great fun, and during the day people could choose whether to climb hills (which a few in our party did – there is one hill walk nearby that takes about 3 hours up to the trig point and back), play table tennis in the games room or chat next to the wood stove in the living room. Alison was also happy for us to decorate the house with bunting & birthday banners, and to have tea lights in jars around the place which meant we could make it really cosy & lovely for our friend arriving. Overall Mosspaul was brilliant and we’d all heartily recommend it for anyone wanting a weekend like ours. Thanks for having us Alison!

    Matthew2016-04-17T00:00:00Z
  • Mosspaul is exactly what it says on the tin, a very large house in a secluded, scenic area! A group of us stayed Fri-Sun to celebrate my husband's 30th and had a brilliant time. Highlights were the working bar area (much more fun than just hanging out in the living space), the large cinema room (perfect for a screening of our recent wedding video and favourite films) and big industrial style kitchen for cooking up a feast. Alison and her husband stay in a connected space and are around to help, but we had privacy and were able to party without any worry of waking the hosts! Our only (major!) regret is not working out that since the hot-tub can take 6-8 hours to heat, we needed to get up early on the Sat to get it going before it turned dark again, but it looked really cool and perhaps we'll get another go at it if we return in the summer!

  • A family of three, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cosy Cottage just before Christmas. A lovely cottage, very homely and inviting! We loved the bedroom upstairs and the very relaxing lounge adjoining it. A modern but cosy feel, we are hoping to return again at the end of this year! Everything was clean and tidy and very well presented. Thank you for a lovely stay.

  • This cottage turned out to be a cosy one indeed and a perfect base to explore the Northumberland National Park area (Hadrian's Wall, ...). It's also at a great location in Bellingham, within few minutes walking distance from shops etc. Ian and Jayne have been proactive in providing info about getting access to the cottage ahead of our stay and quickly responded to our questions throughout.

  • I booked this cottage for a little new year get away for my parents, daughter, hubby and the two dogs. We were giving directions by Ian and Jayne and found them simple to follow was easy to find. The cottage was beautiful and spacious, very clean and well equipped even with little touches like books and games. Ian and Jayne left us all little gifts to including the dogs which were all loved and very much appreciated by all. The cottage is located close to all the shops, pubs and cafes in the little village literally on the door step. will definitely be back again for another relaxing break it was perfect. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

  • The cottage is in a lovely, idealic area with many walks nearby. There was a few pubs but the Cheviot Hotel was a great place to eat and drink. Ian text on the day to ensure key collection was easy and provided step by step directions also - great communication and great house/location.

    Kirsty2016-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Ian and Jayne were very welcoming, even offering entry a day earlier than we needed. The place was easy to find just off the main street and although this old converted barn stuck out a bit from the backs of the other houses around, it was actually very private with the living room and main bedroom upstairs, and the kitchen, bathroom and second bedroom downstairs. It was very quiet and peaceful, yet close to the shops, pubs and other facilities in town.

Roy's Room is part of the Scotchcoulthard Farm and Holiday Cottages business. It is a twin room with an en-suite shower room, fridge, kettle, toaster, TV. There are three cottages in total along with a games room and indoor swimming pool in the summer. Scotchcoulthard is set north of Hadrian's Wall just seven miles from Haltwhistle, the Centre of Britain. Not another inhabited dwelling can be seen. Dogs are welcome and we have our own who will greet you.
Set on a small farm within 180 acres it is surrounded by splendid scenery with magnificent views and not another inhabited dwelling in sight. Scotchcoulthard is four miles away from The Military Road (B6318 which runs parallel to Hadrian's Wall). The last farm you pass is two miles away. If you want to really 'get away from it all' it is ideal. For those who prefer a more populated area it is not ideal! The farm track from the road is ½ mile long and can be a bit rough at times. However if taken slowly it is fine. Dogs are welcome and our own dogs will welcome you. There is no extra charge and no restriction on number. For those who love dogs but don't have any, our dogs are happy to step into the breach! Naturally there is plenty of wildlife. Red squirrels live in the surrounding forest along with badgers, deer, buzzards, foxes and many others. The nearest town of Haltwhistle (named Centre of Britain) is seven miles away. It has a couple of supermarkets and local shops for most essentials. It has its own unique history including a 13th century church with stained glass windows made by William Morris & Co. in 1872. The windows were the work of Edward Burne-Jones, Ford Maddox Brown and Philip Webb who were Pre-Raphelite artists. There are many walks in and around Haltwhistle with two walking festivals a year. A burn running through Haltwhistle has a spectacular walk through beautiful scenery. There is a Swimming and Leisure Centre with outdoor pool open from Easter until September.
Scotchcoulthard Farm and Self-Catering Holiday Cottages is situated four miles north of Hadrian's Wall in The Northumberland National Park at its most spectacular part. It is halfway between Carlisle and Hexham on the edge of Wark Forest which leads into Kielder Forest. It is necessary to cross the wall to reach Scotchcoulthard and the sites of Housesteads, Vindolanda and The Roman Army Museum are only a short distance away. Although remote, Scotchcoulthard is not isolated. It is possible to be parked in The Metro Centre, Newcastle, Carlisle, The Lake District or Scotland within the hour.
  • It's very secluded which can be great if you're into that. There's also dogs around the property which is lovely.

  • Totally loved staying at Susan's place. She kindly greeted me a little later than the stated arrival time as I was running late! Susan even called to check I wasn't too lost and that easvery kind. Place is in a beautiful setting if you're looking for a tranquil place to walk, rest and relax. It really was beautiful and within 15 mins drive of some small towns to explore. Lots of open spaces do my dog to run and enjoy too. The facilities in Roy's Room were all as advertised plus some more, and while I didn't use the small kitchen on my stay, it was plenty equipped to make some meals if I were to stay longer. I used the pool in the evening and the morning and this was a great addition to the settings and just made the relaxing even better! Theres so much more I could say about Scotchcoultard, but I'll leave it until my next review as I will definitely be heading back for a longer stay when I can.

  • Stayed here with my Mum and 2 dogs, great location, close to the military road which runs along hadrians wall. Beautiful place to stay in amazing surroundings. Definitely worth a visit.

  • Very nice farmhouse in a spectacular part of Northumberland Park and nearby of Hadrian's wall. Cozy and friendly atmosphere. Excellent place to escape from city rush and a lot of space for dog walks.

  • We didn't get to stay at Susan's place due to personal reasons. She was very understanding and thoughtful. I'm 100% sure you'll be welcomed with much love, so be sure to book a stay here when you have the time. Susan, do let us know if you happen to be in Amsterdam someday. :)

  • Located in the middle of nowhere, just a few miles north of Hadrians Wall, the BnB is an amazing place to start your exploration of the scenic surroundings. Susan and her Husband were lovely hosts, kind enough to spend the evening together sharing food and wisdoms. If you can go without internet or mobile signal for the duration of your stay (which I would highly recommend), you are in for an amazing time!

    Nico2017-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, very rustic, excellent for star gazing on a clear night, enjoyed the local pub and also the snooker table onsite. Hosts are genuinely friendly and really helpful.

Delightful one bedroom house in a lovely quiet residential area of town. Purchased as a holiday home and loved by the owner. The flat is warm and welcoming decorated tastefully throughout. The house is a two minute to Town centre in the historic town of Hawick situated in the lovely Scottish Borders. Hawick is renown for its stunning natural park and cashmere industry. The town is an an ideal base for exploring the stunning Scottish Borders, a golfing, fishing and cyclists paradise.
  • This was a very pleasant and peaceful flat, conveniently located and very clean. I recommend guests arrive a bit earlier in the day to be sure of parking in front of the house. Otherwise there is free parking in the streets all around. You can walk into the centre of Hawick in a few minutes from the flat.

A truly wonderful period home situated in the historic Scottish Borders. Set in several acres this period house has a wonderful 40 sq metre garden room, outdoor hot tub and garden BBQ house. Open fires and a formal dining room add to the ambience!
Branxholm Knowe offers over 3500 square feet (320 sq mtr) of space for you to enjoy. A period property dating from the mid 1850's it has a lot of character but has been updated in recent years without losing its' period charm.
Lots of history - think Border Reivers, castles, market towns, great walking, cycling, golf, riding, fishing - there is something for everyone in this area.
  • Lovely home in a great location. Shame about the misty weather, the views from the conservatory would have been beautiful! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Carlton House is situated next to the River North Tyne in rural Northumberland, just three quarters of a mile (15 minutes walk) from the centre of Bellingham Village. Local attractions include Kielder Reservoir & Forest Park, Hadrian's Wall, Hareshaw Linn Walk and Bellingham Heritage Centre. Carlton House offers an ideal base for cyclists, walkers, golfers, fishermen or anyone just wanting a relaxing break in the countryside. Bellingham is on the Pennine Way, The Sandstone Way & Reivers Route.
My super friendly, easy going, elderly Labradoodle lives here. Sorry I can't provide breakfast due to other commitments and also being a terrible cook. Please feel free to bring your own porridge or there are lots of options in the village i.e. cafe's, co-op, bakers, butchers, pubs. The bathroom is next door to the bedroom. Children are welcome but please remember my dog lives here. There is a secure lock up for bikes.
The Sheep can get quite noisy at times.

    Alix2017-07-22T00:00:00Z

  • Carlton House is in a lovely rural setting, close to the river North Tyne and with views across open countryside. The cottage is warm and cozy and well equipped and neat and tidy. Glenda was a great host, helpful and welcoming and her labradoodle dog is a friendly chap. The village has pubs and shops and is only a 15 minute walk along the riverside from the copttage. We had a lovely couple of days there and it is an excellent location for walking. All in all highly recommended! Trevor and Anne

    Trevor2017-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely room, clean and fresh, great location, good wifi, tea making facilities, everything we needed

    Lizzie2017-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Glenda’s Carlton House has a beautiful rural setting in the last bend of the Boat Road in Bellingham. You could easy walk from Carlton House to Bellingham to visit some nice pubs restaurants or the Co-op. The house is well built; from the terrace you can see the river Tyne and nature is all around the place. If you are lucky - and know where to look - you could see otter, deer, kingfisher and owls just around the corner. The sitting room with wood burner and big TV, the terrace, the sleeping room and the bath room are spacious and everything is very clean and in perfect order. Glenda is a fantastic host and she makes you feel at home from the first moment. She has lots of information about the surrounding villages, Kielder Forest Park, Hadrian’s wall, the International Dark Sky Park and other places of interest to go to. Glenda has travelled around the world a lot and when travellers meet conversation comes easy, always with respect for your privacy. And there is Odin, the Labradoodle. Probably one ‘woof’ and after that enormous effort he is your friend for ever. Highly recommended!

    Moray2016-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely fabulous experience from start to finish. Great communication before we arrived with helpful directions. When we arrived we found the key where we'd been told and took a look around the cottage - it's gorgeous! In the kitchen we found freshly baked muffins (delicious!) - cake is always good :) Debs came down to say hello just after we arrived and stayed for a chat. There was a printout of events taking place in Hawick over the weekend - nice to find up to date info. We quickly got settled in and made ourselves at home. The cottage was spotlessly clean, the bed was oh so comfy that getting up was a minor problem, the shower was lovely with plenty of water pressure, not one of those dribbly ones we've come across before! We enjoyed a very lazy weekend, watching the birds from the sitting room window was a real treat, especially seeing the woodpecker who popped along for food each day. We honestly couldn't fault our stay - Debs and Peter you are doing a fantastic job! Thank you for being lovely hosts (and letting me into the hen house!) We will be back again soon :)

    Pauline2014-04-01T00:00:00Z
  • Debs was a great host very friendly and helpful . Her place was all we could have asked for and very Homely and cosy. The Beds are very Comfy and the Showers Great. The surrounding area is Beautiful with Lovely Walks and Drives. For Meals out the Mayfield was the best Carvery we have ever had not sure if it's just Sundays for the Carvery but the rest of the menu looks good. We also ate in the Night Safe Bistro which was also Fantastic. Lovely drive into Edinburgh go the scenic route. All in all Fantastic.

  • The location of the apartment was great and met my needs perfectly. Communication from the hosts was excellent and everything was well explained with easy to follow instructions for initial access. I would definitely stay here again if there was more work in the area.

This flat is on the second floor of a lovely building in the centre of Hawick. Hawick is a traditional mill town in the middle of the Scottish borders region, a beautiful area south of Edinburgh. Great to explore the whole area!
This is a lovely, refurbished one bedroom flat in the centre of Hawick. There are lovely views down to the river below and across the town. Equipped with central heating and washing machine. This is an ideal place to explore Hawick itself as well as the beautiful surrounding area of the Scottish Borders.
This is a lovely, picturesque town in the middle of the Scottish borders region. The area is famous for textiles, outdoor pursuits such as fishing, lovely walks, great food and only 50 miles from Edinburgh. There are lots of beautiful towns and villages in the area and is on the Historic route from Edinburgh (A7 road) to Carlisle. There are lots of things to explore in the region including guided tours of various Mills, weaving, knitting. Good range of shops in Hawick and fantastic restaurants. Check out fabulous antiques shop, Lovely Things'. Tweed Forest National Park is close-by for hiking. There are many castles and places of historic interest including Jedburgh, a few miles away, Kelso and Montrose.
  • Es un buen lugar para visitar the Borders.

  • This is an apartment with extremely limited furnishings. There was no comfortable place to sit. There was no place to store your own things. Privacy was an issue because the only thing covering the front window was a dirty old sheet that only covered half of the window. The stairs leading up to the apartment are treacherous. Police had to be notified during our stay, due to a domestic violence issue going on in the apartment above. I would describe this apartment as more of a "flop house", and I recommend that you stay in a hotel instead. Although we never met our host in our 90 day stay, in our opinion, she has some stability issues.
