You will find the best Falafel-Man in the city the most unusual falafel behind this Berlin window in the middle of Wedding. Falafel meets plantain and peanut sauce - sounds crazy? It is, but delicious! Apart from the taste experience, watching the falafel-man with the contagious good mood while preparing, while in the background African sounds bring a piece of safari to the capital. There are other very interesting sounding dishes on the menu

Café Pförtner in Wedding has in its second season proved that’s it’s one of the best restaurants in Wedding. Visit for lovely Italo-inspired food with tons of international flavours in a very charming location. Café Pförtner is located in an unassuming corner of Wedding, right next to the small canal Panke that stretches through the district. The restaurant opened in late 2013 and became a true Geheimtip during the summer of 2014 when people from the area and the nearby studios started coming around. After the successful summer Café Pförtner took a break during the winter but is now back, better than ever. In what used to be the gatekeepers house of a former BVG repair shop, you can nowadays enjoy some of the finest grub in Wedding. The place is like a small labyrinth with a pretty small indoor area and two large outdoor areas, in the front and in the back. What the venue might lack in sophistication it sure makes up with a lot of charm. And a bus. Yes, the masterpiece of the Café Pförtner location is an old BVG bus from the 70’s that has been remodelled into one of the coolest dining rooms in Berlin. So if eating a nice candlelight dinner in a bus is on your bucket list, this is your chance. Before you board the bus you’re going to have to order your food at the bar. The food concept at Café Pförtner started out as a simplistic Italian kitchen with lovely pastas but has for this season changed into a finer dining concept, utilizing many different styles. All in all there are around 6-8 things on the small menu, which changes on a weekly basis. Starters include simple and delicious items like a burrata or a cold beetroot gazpacho and there is usually also a lovely salad on the menu. It’s really for the mains that the whole business becomes more sophisticated. Take the pork belly I had last time, slow cooked to a buttery consistency and browned off before serving it to me with some lovely chard. Beautiful, simple and fantastic. Sometimes the chef operates on the border of too funky, like the Kobia sashimi with melon and sour beets I had once, a dish where the lovely fish was overpowered by the beet sauce in a slightly weird way. For every bad dish I’ve had two great ones at Café Pförtner though and I really enjoy the experimental path the kitchen has taken. Be advised that the portions can be very small, especially for the main courses. While you enjoy your food you can enjoy a fine selection of beer, where the highlights include local Schoppe beer from the tap and several fine, bottled craft beers. Or why not enjoy some lovely Italian wine from their selection of bottles. Café Pförtner is one of the most interesting dining destinations in Wedding and a great example of how this district is developing. It’s unique location and vibe make this place special and while the food concept might not be fully done yet, there are glimpses of genius in some dishes. I hope that this place stays open for the winter this season and that the kitchen develops a couple of more steps while also turning back down complexity a couple of notches. https://berlinfoodstories.com/2015/08/07/cafe-pfortner-a-wedding-gem/

New burger shop in Wedding, which can take it with the chic shed in Prenzlauer Berg or Neukölln confidently. It is not a simple snack bar, but rather a darkly furnished place with natural wooden tables and floors and a combination of exposed brick walls on the one hand and modern decorative wallpaper on the other. I order a cheeseburger with small fries (9.50 €) and an Afri Cola (2 €). Being asked how to order my burger when ordering is a good indication of the expected quality. The very good meat is perfect as desired medium and the burger is very juicy, which is not least due to the decent amount of sauce. Thanks to size and sauce, the burger is a bit hard to eat, from who is on juicy burgers with good sesame bun (by Beumer & Lutum), is right here, because even if the style is not quite my personal taste (I'm more on Briochebrötchen and drip-free burger), so this cheeseburger is unquestionably of very good quality. A friendly restaurant with a coherent concept. https://sattundfroh.de/louis-alfons/

The name says it all: There is fried chicken with Korean sauces , on request also kimchi (3 €) and beer from the bottle - for example Kölsch, Pilsner Urquell, Berliner Berg or Tannenzäpfle. Korean chicken & beer are also my recommendations for this place. Those who come in hungry are best served with the chicken pieces. Four wings with sauce cost € 5.60, taking a larger portion will make it a little cheaper. The burger can not inspire me and the ramyun soup is extremely spicy and tastes of dry noodles from the cup. Everything speaks for the chicken wings. In addition to the house sauce (Dizzy), there is still a spicy variant and a sweet with soy sauce and garlic. Neapolitan pizza is currently very popular and they are also available in the wedding: The dough is a bit thicker, especially on the edge, elastic-soft, he should fold well (so when it is baked), the pizza tastes a little less crispy than the Roman, a bit like bread and is like something black charred. The pizza dough at Stranero rests for a long time and becomes particularly fluffy. The restaurant is simple and has 26 pizzas on the menu (all under € 9), one antipasto (large or small) and dessert. I order a Bufala for 8 € and a Fritz Cola for 2.50 €. The buffalo mozzarella is inconsequential, frankly I thought the cook unintentionally caught the cow's milk. But otherwise the pizza is very good. Aromatic basil and a very fruity but also spicy tomato sauce (one of the guys tells me it's a Sardinian sauce) make a great toppings. The most interesting thing is the dough : it is actually of an exceptional, tasty quality . I am happy to come back to this shop and try for example the Pizza Stranero with Scamorza and salami. https://sattundfroh.de/stranero/

Until late into the night you can enjoy crispy chicken for little money, Half a chicken, salad, fries, bread, hummus and garlic dip cost only 6 €. It's not much cheaper. The bread is standard and tastes like nothing in many Arabian restaurants. The fries are boring too. At my next table all have taken rice and looks more interesting to me than the fries on my plate. Together with the good salad, I would even get a halfway balanced meal with rice instead of fries. The chicken is perfectly grilled: very spicy, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. One must not forget the price: slowly grown organic chickens are a different (in terms of taste and morals), but also cost many times. If you want a normal grilled chicken you will not go wrong. Also hummus and garlic sauce go well with the Hendl. https://sattundfroh.de/ya-hala-chicken/

In the middle of Berlin-Wedding, an intercultural community and lease garden has been created, inviting visitors to join in the gardening and self-harvesting of Weddinger Kiezgemüse. The focus of urban gardening is the production of food in the city with a special focus on the ecological cultivation of regional and ancient cultivars. In the gartenbeet garden, people of all ages come together for gardening, building with recycled materials, cooking together, at various workshops on topics such as sustainability and nutrition, in the garden café and at cultural events. In addition to the community garden, private individuals and institutions have the opportunity to lease beds for one season. https://www.rbb888.de/service/die-kolja-kleeberg-show/koljas-restauran-tipps/cafe-himmelbeet.html

BALDON is canteen, bar and restaurant. A brutal concrete building, designed by Arno Brandlhuber, transformed into a meeting place in the Wedding district. A changing lunch, brunch and dinner menu based on the season and availability of the products is as much a part of the story as the story behind the products. That does not mean that we do not use pepper, lemon or vanilla, but rather support small producers, no matter where they come from. The targeted exchange with farmers, fishermen, hunters and winegrowers not only enables sustainable enjoyment, but also opens our eyes to the beauty of the simple. https://www.opentable.de/r/baldon-berlin?lang=en

Coffee Circle, Wedding coffee roastery that took that northern kiez by storm when it opened two years back is rumoured to be moving onto their next venture. The word on the street is that the decade old coffee purveyors are working on a new coffee shop in the direct vicinity of their roastery. Could this be a change in direction for Wedding gastronomy/cafe culture? Could one actually develop? We have been waiting for the Wedding gastronomy renaissance, or even just naissance since the fall of the wall, and perhaps this will be an important step in that direction. Not much intel is available on the new shop at the moment, but Mr. Eatler will keep you abreast. http://www.eatler.de/2019/06/12/coffee-roastery-berlin-restaurant/

To describe Pankstrasse in the Berlin district of Wedding as spectacularly unspectacular is probably putting it politely. This 4-lane highway lined with dreary apartment blocks, multi-storey car parks and bland chain stores it isn't exactly easy on the eye. But the unexpected sight of Wedding's Amtsgericht - or district courthouse - changes things considerably. Like many of Berlin's municipal buildings, it's a grand historic set-piece, an architectural affirmation of civic authority. Constructed between 1901 and 1906 in Gothic Revival style, its particularly palatial appearance is no coincidence - the design was influenced by the Albrecht Castle in Meissen, one of Germany's finest late Gothic monuments. The richly carved main entrance is especially ornate, surmounted by a 3.2 metre-high allegorical representation of Justice. This symbolic figure was symbolically vandalised in the late 1980s, and eventually replaced by a copy. In any case, it's said that the original was itself more or less a replica, closely based on a figure located in a penal institution in Tegel. In 1933 the National Socialists added a prominent 'Reichsadler' eagle to the main portal, which remains in place although the garlanded swastika it clutched in its talons has, of course, long since been removed. All in all, an unexpected sight in an area of Berlin that's generally lacking in architectural eye-candy. But in this case we're talking a fairytale Wedding indeed. http://www.secretcitytravel.com/berlin-march-2014/wedding-historic-amstgericht-court.shtml

ExRotaprint is a model for urban development that rules out financial profit through ownership and establishes a heterogeneous, open environment for all community groups. ExRotaprint is the former site of the Rotaprint printing press manufacturing plant in Berlin’s Wedding district. A security bond issued by the Berlin Senate in the mid-1980s for the ailing Rotaprint AG led, following the company’s bankruptcy in 1989, to the property being transferred to the district and eventually to the Liegenschaftsfonds Berlin (Berlin Real Estate Fund), which was contracted to sell the 10,000-square-meter property to the highest bidder. In 2004, visual artists Daniela Brahm and Les Schliesser formulated a concept for taking over the property by on-site tenants. The goal was to develop the location to serve a heterogeneous mix of uses for Arbeit, Kunst, Soziales (work, art, and community) and affordable rents for all. Following lengthy, arduous negotiations with the Berlin Senate and the Liegenschaftsfonds Berlin, the tenant-founded ExRotaprint gGmbH took over the complex in 2007. ExRotaprint institutes a unique form of ownership and self-organization within a precarious environment; the legal structure prioritizes group interests over individual interests and ties the notion of profit to the physical site and its goals. The complex has been withdrawn from property speculation for the long-term. The focus here is not on marketing or financial profit, but on the users and the work they create. ExRotaprint is predicated on a diverse social mix that lays the groundwork for new impulses and furthering mutual acceptance in a precarious neighborhood—for and with the people who live here. In order to ensure the long-term objectives of the project, ExRotaprint set up a legal configuration comprising a heritable building right and non-profit status. The buildings are owned by ExRotaprint gGmbH. The land is owned by two foundations that are aligned against property speculation and exclude its resale. Based on a ninety-nine-year heritable building right, ExRotaprint manages the site and is responsible for all aspects related to project development, the renting of spaces, financing, and renovation. As a nonprofit organization, ExRotaprint gGmbH is committed to the nonprofit objectives it has set out for itself. Any financial profits generated must be applied toward the preservation of the historical architectural monument and the promotion of art and culture; the syphoning off of capital from the project for other uses is excluded. ExRotaprint rents a third of its overall space to each area of “work, art, community.” Working on site are businesses, community outreach organizations, and independent creatives. What emerges is an overall community image—one that challenges the imposed dreams of investment return monocultures, and instead promotes togetherness and exchange. The profit of the project lies in the stability it offers and the ways it is used—today and in the future. https://www.exrotaprint.de/en/exrotaprint-ggmbh/

Shopping

It's not just a miniature Texan Ranch casually tucked away on a Berlin side street - it's Roy Dunn's Western Store, purveyor of one of the finest selections of cowboy gear you're likely to find outside the US. Star attraction is a gleaming array of cowboy boots that even attracts American buyers (apparently the range of beautifully crafted, snip-toe models somehow excels anything easily available in the States). And to complete the Western look, the store is packed with every accessory that any cowboy or cowgirl could possibly require, from Stetson hats to bootlace ties, big ol' buckles and brightly embroidered shirts. Mosey on down for a complete change of wardrobe, or simply to experience Berlin's unique cowboy trading post. A steaming mug of coffee awaits every customer, and there's plenty of room to hitch a horse in the courtyard. http://www.secretcitytravel.com/berlin-october-2014/cowboy-western-clothing-store-berlin.shtml

Deep within the no-man’s-land between Moabit and Wedding lies this pocket-sized version of Kater Blau or Sisyphos, a wooden shack with a greenhouse-like transparent ceiling where a colourful crowd squeezes onto one dancefloor for 24-hour disco-house-confetti marathons. Though it doesn’t publicise its address or lineups it’s become an open secret among the clubbing faithful, with long Friday night queues (Saturday morning is a bit better) and a picky door policy that favours regulars https://www.exberliner.com/whats-on/music-nightlife/beyond-berghain/
