Amazing medieval castle of Roccascalegna (castello di Roccascalegna) is a must-see. It's been built on a huge rock situated in the middle of a charming little town. It's one of these gobsmacking little-known places that make you wonder 'how on earth I never knew such castle existed??' . Call into a lovely artisan shop/workshop at the foot of the castle called Reka, see ceramics in the making and buy a stylish souvenir. Passing by a traditional bakery on the way you must taste pane porchettato (bread with chopped roast pork), pizza scima (a local bread) and a croissant.

In Gessopalena you can see ruins of an old castle from the medieval times, carved into rocks which form the hill on which it had been built. In the town itself there is an inconspicuous patisserie where you can get the best millefoglie in the area.

Less than an hour's walk from Il Monte or 5 min drive down (you can actually see it from our terrace). You must see it to believe how amazingly it's positioned, literally plastered onto a side of a hill. Think of some movie shot in one of them sleepy old little Italian towns with minuscule curvy streets and stone houses - that's Pennadomo. Add a 100-years old ladies chatting at the doorstep and elderly men at a local bar - yes, that's definitely Pennadomo.

Parks & Nature
One of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, it's also a nature reserve. It's absolutely stunning, with emerald green waters, wild birds, deer, foxes and wild boar in surrounding woods. There's a great walking path along the bank with great views and not too many people.

Enjoy its beauty In the spring and early summer the most. Late summer/autumn, often the waterfall carries little water and is less spectacular. The final section of the route with the best view (to the left) is difficult for small children and people with impaired mobility (steep steps)
