Sightseeing

It's a beautiful place, go and hear a concert there if you can. Or just walk around it, and go and see the museum of cathedral treasures. There is a cafe, but we recommend the one at the Almshouses (on Palace Green in front of the Cathedral) instead.

It's just opposite the Cathedral and is worth going on the tour, if you like this kind of thing!

The Town Hall itself is OK, but we recommend it as a starting point for walking around Durham. Walk from the Town Hall up Saddler Street to the Cathedral. Or walk down past Oxfam, along to Elvet Bridge, and then down to the River. As the cathedral is on a peninsula, you'll find most routes take you to the river eventually...

Lovely old English manor house with delightful gardens and nice cafe (even has its own ghost!) Really nice for adults and kids (has maze etc), but quite pricey to get in.

Food Scene

Great food, both British and more exotic, reasonably priced for what it is, and a great atmosphere (can be a bit busy though, must book beforehand). Is in walking distance of the house. Also good for a quiet drink, but not on a Saturday night when it will be heaving.

They do scrumptious vegetarian (or meat eaters) platters, also speciality coffees and desserts. Lovely quiet atmosphere, some people go to work here! Also has a basket of toys for little kids. Also sells really good bread to take home! Only open from 10 am till 5, till 4 on Saturdays, and not open at all on Sundays or Mondays... You can walk up Claypath to it, or if you are lucky park outside (but pay at the meter).

This is really more of a posh cafe/restaurant than a pub! Very, very tasty food (including vegetarian) cooked beautifully, but is expensive... you have been warned... Great for a special breakfast or brunch...

Drinks & Nightlife

This is one of Durham's oldest inns, dating back to at least 1600, and is reputed to have two ghosts. The interior comprises an L-shaped bar and a top room linked by stairs. A friendly pub, it attracts a good mix including locals, students and visitors to the city. Enjoy a good range of ales and home-cooked food, the Wednesday quiz (arrive early), and a folk group on Mondays and Tuesdays. Local CAMRA branch Town Pub of the Year 2015 and 2016.

Parks & Nature

It's really nice and peaceful just to walk along beside the river. And you can get great views of the Cathedral from there. Or you may like to hire a rowing boat from Elvet Bridge, or go on a guided tour on the Prince Bishop boat which also leaves from there. The Cathedral is on a peninsula and the river goes right round it, so it can get a bit confusing.. There is a riverside pub near Elvet Bridge, and you can buy ice creams opposite it in the Summer.

Ruined Priory by the river, lovely riverside walks. Not really worth going inside the ruins and cafe is pretty dire, but really atmospheric place to walk, cross river on interesting wooden bridge, see sandstone cliffs, woodland. Have to have a car to get there, and pay small charge for parking, otherwise free.

This is a health food shop and also a cafe. Good place to meet other like minded 'green' folk, while sipping a dairy free coffee, if that way inclined. Very friendly, and sell all sorts of eco and organic products (not usually bread though). Good charity shops nearby!
