Sightseeing

Polar Caves Park is a set of glacially-formed caves formed from granite boulders and are so named because the deepest cave is cold enough to allow snow to linger long into the summer. The caves are a popular tourist destination. The cave park contains boardwalks, giant boulder gardens, and a small zoo, with deer, pheasants and other unusual game birds, as well as a mining game for children. A rock climbing wall for all ages has been added that takes advantage of the granite cliffs. The caves are well-marked and relatively easy to traverse using walkways and stairs. They are naturally cool during the summer. Located on Rte. 25 in Rumney, 5 miles west of Rte 93. https://www.polarcaves.com

Stinson Lake is a 342-acre (1.6 mi by .6 mi) water body in Rumney. The lake is in the southern part of the White Mountains and is the largest lake in the White Mountain National Forest. Water from Stinson Lake flows via Stinson Brook, the Baker River, and the Pemigewasset River to the Merrimack River. The lake is a result of glacier deposits. It has a maximum depth of 77 ft. with a few shallow banks around the southern rim. Stinson is one of the few lakes around the region without parasitic plants. Its waters are very clear, with visibility to 25 ft. Stinson Lake lies in the northern corner of Rumney, just south of the town boundary with Ellsworth and northwest of 2,900-ft Stinson Mountain. Most of the lake is fronted by private property and cabins, but boating access is available next to the former Stinson Lake Store on the western side of the lake. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stinson_Lake

Quincy Bog is a wetland with peat soils derived from decomposing vegetation, receiving most of its water from streams and groundwater. Quincy Bog was formed as a kettle hole bog over 12,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age and gradually became a fen as decomposing plant material filled in the kettle hole. A mile-long trail around the bog starts at the nature center at 131 Quincy Bog Road. Free and open to the public. https://quincybog.org
