Some of our favourite spots in the island!
Granadilla de Abona is one of the most beloved municipalities of Tenerife, located in the south of the island, occupying an area of 155 km2. The municipality extends from ‘Guajara’ (the second highest mountain on the island, after ‘El Teide’) to the Atlantic Ocean. Tenerife South Airport is located in this municipality, as well as the seaside village of El Medano (Spanish for ‘The Sand Dune’), where many important windsurfing competitions are held. La Montaña Roja (‘The Red Mountain’), a volcanic cone located in El Medano, has been declared protected natural reserve, along with five other ‘espacios naturales’, which together comprise 25% of the municipality’s geography. Abona was the name of a Guanche (aboriginal Berber inhabitants of the Canary Islands) ‘menceyato’ (meaning ‘kingdom’), that existed in this region of the island at the time of Spanish conquest in the late fifteenth century. Founded around 1445, Abona was ruled by Atguaxoña, son of Axerax. It extended from the Rio de Chasna to Adeje, from the Barranco de Herques to Güimar. The Spanish name ‘Granadilla’ was not added until the end of the 16th century, but the European-led settlement of the area began at the time of conquest.

We strongly recommend you visit El Medano. This seaside village is just a 20min drive from Granadilla and it has the largest natural beaches of Tenerife. If you would rather have quiet beaches mostly popular with the locals and the opportunity to practice your favourite water sports then El Medano is the place for you.

Make sure to check out the cliffs of Los Gigantes: remarkable sheer rock walls that plunge into the ocean a quarter of the way down the west coast of Tenerife. These massive cliffs drop into the sea from a height of 500m (and 800m in some places).

Make time to see Villa de la Orotava. Situated by the old banana plantations of the valley which bears the same name, this old town is famous for its characteristic Canarian courtyards, squares and traditional houses. The old historic centre – declared Monument of Artistic National Interest – should certainly be visited. The Concepcion Parish Church is also a national monument. The ‘Casa de los Balcones’ (House of Balconies) is the crown jewel of the island’s traditional architecture.

Explore Puerto de la Cruz. Nestled in the beautiful region of the Orotava Valley (of lush green landscape and tropical fruit plantations) this quaint old town has a distinct Canarian character. Much of the area around the old fishing port is full of narrow cobbled streets lined with traditional cafés and bars. The harbour is also a lovely place to visit. Additionally, there is a selection of high-end boutiques, charming squares and many tourist attractions located all over the resort (including the zoo and marine theme park, Loro Parque).

Spend some time in Santa Cruz, the capital city. Located on the northeast coast of the island, Santa Cruz is a bustling city and shipping port (one of the busiest in Spain). The enormous harbour holds many container ships, cruise liners and ferries. Situated in a large natural bay, it has a stunning backdrop of mountains (Anaga Mountains) that are over 1,000 metres high. Also, make sure to check out the futuristic ‘Auditorio de Tenerife’ (Tenerife Auditorium), designed by celebrated architect Santiago Calatrava.

Adeje is a municipality in southwest Tenerife. It’s home to the Costa Adeje resort, featuring Siam Park (a Thai-themed water park) and many beaches, like the gray-sand ‘Playa El Duque’. Make sure to walk the trails of ‘El Barranco del Infierno’ a rugged nature reserve. In spite of its fearsome name, Hell’s Gorge, is a lush green ravine, an oasis in the harsh landscape of the southern region.

Granadilla

Some of our favourite places in Granadilla!
A ‘tasca’ is a tavern or bar, especially one serving food. Great Canarian and Spanish cuisine is served in this little gem of a restaurant, which is tucked away inside a cave, built into the side of a quarry, hence the name (‘cantera’ means quarry).

Another favourite ‘tasca’ of ours! This one serves great and authentic Canarian food at unbeatable prices. Astrid Oheim, the chef and owner, is German, but in her own words, “she’s more Canarian than gofio”.

A Canarian winery that produces awesome wines (whites and reds) using grapes harvested in the Canary Islands. They do guided visits of the vineyard and wine tasting tours. They also have a great restaurant overlooking their vines!

The Granadilla History Museum offers visitors a detailed record of local history. In its various exhibition rooms you can see objects from the municipality that authentically represent the lifestyle of the Guanches (aboriginal Berber inhabitants of the Canary Islands) who lived in the ‘menceyato’ (kingdom) of Abona. Of great interest is the exhibition room dedicated to ancient burial rites.
