Food Scene

A simple menu (pizza, roast chicken, ribs), done extremely well. The price is low and the portions are generous. Plus it is one block from the flat, so takeaway is often on the cards.

A very good quality, typically modern Spanish restaurant; the menu is Catalan dishes, fish, steak, paella and the like. It is popular with the locals and tourists alike, owing primarily to its excellent situation on the main plaza. Whilst not cheap, it is definitely reasonably priced for the quality.

A great traditional “British” pub type atmosphere, although it is actually owned and operated by a Dutch Couple. The menu is your typical burgers and steaks type thing, although there are a few Dutch dishes mixed in. Good prices, good beer, good atmosphere.

At the extreme end of the town, Cheers Playa is a lovely spot overlooking the beach. A large terrace, nice decor, and a lovely owner. The food is typical Spanish; tapas, raciones, and big plates. Good quality, at reasonable prices but the real reason that you come here is for the magnificent view from the terrace. Have a glass of wine and relax!

The most famous and most central bar/café in L’Estartit, right in front of the marina. It is open from very early until about midnight every day of the year. A bit of everything on the menu; sandwiches (“entrepans”), pizza, tapas, paella, and English breakfast! The prices are reasonable and the location makes it a great spot to watch the crowds go by.

An extremely popular place with the locals, they only make paella and fideuà. Out of season they are only open on the weekend, though they are 7 days a week in the summer. Not the cheapest meal you will ever have, but the quality is just about the best you can imagine.

An extremely popular new Italian restaurant on the Passeig Maritim, there is usually a queue for a table. Once tried though and you will understand why. It is pizza and pasta just like mamma would make! Delicioso!

Let's be honest. The supermarket is a bit limited on selection. But the reason I have listed it is the fantastic bakery / croissanteria connected to it. I tend to pop down most every morning for my bread and pastries. It is wonderful. And the fresh squeezed orange juice, buy it by the cup or by the litre.

The food is outstanding and while it isn't the cheapest meal in town, it is definitely the one with the best view! A three course dinner will set you back 14 euros and with its elevated position, you get uninterrupted views over the marina to Begur. Unbeatable!

This is actually our favourite place in L'Estartit. The kind of place that we miss when we are not in Spain. A small restaurant with a small garden terrace specialising in local Catalan foods like Galta en salsa, butifarra con judias, sepia a la plancha, or arroz negre. There is a wonderful wood-fired pizza oven in back and a double sided fireplace that you can enjoy in the front bar or back restaurant. Very pretty in the summer but absolutely cozy and wonderful in the colder winter months. And the prices reflect its position away from the beach. You won't be disappointed!

Sightseeing

A tough climb to the top of the massif, but the views are worth it. Start early to give yourself the best chance of making it up in the cool of the morning. Its not the Pyrenées, but be sure to wear apropriate shoes, clothes, etc. There is no car access.

The beautiful church of Sant Genis in Torroella de Montgri dates from 1209 and is a beautiful example of gothic catalan architecture. Well worth a visit.

Parks & Nature

Beautiful spot at the mouth of the longest river that starts and ends in Catalunya. The end of the 250 km Ruta Del Ter (a cycling and walking route linking two poles of attraction, the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava, via an itinerary following the course of the River Ter and crossing five Catalan countries) offers a great starting point for a long hike, fishing, swimming or just laying around on a beach miles from the built up areas.

The ruins of the old LORAN station (long range radar) operated by the US Coast Guard from 1961 to 1995. The antenna was demolished in 2005. Hauntingly beautiful with views from Cap de Creus to Begur. In the summer you have to hike from the town, although you can drive up the rest of the year.

A pretty little Catalan town with a pleasant Rambla and a lovely little market in the historic centre. Great day out without "going out".

The ruins of the Roman city of Empúries are a real wonder and must be explored. There is a wonderful hiking-biking path from the town of Sant Marti d'Empuries to L'Escala. And for the adventurous, you can continue over the Muntanya Gran (the Parc Natural del Montgri peninsula) that separates L'Escala and L'Estartit!

Entertainment & Activities

A small local cinema, rare to get films in English (for english films with subtitles, look for VO on the billing - means version original). But if you speak Spanish or Catalan you will have a blast.

L'estartit is a scuba diving paradise and there is no shortage of scuba companies to choose from. But two blocks from the flat is L'escola Nautic & Diving and they are the ones I always use. They speak every language and Kevin and his staff will make sure that your dive is one to remember. Tell him I sent you.
