Food scene

This is the best Italian restaurant in the Triangle (it has won best restaurant award for the Triangle several times). It's not downtown and is tucked away in a strip mall but don't let that fool you. It's also not insanely expensive. You can make your meal expensive but you can also make it very reasonable if you try. You've got to get the broccoli. I don't know how they get broccoli to be so amazing.

This is a quick, casual place to eat compared to many of Durham's more expensive fine dining establishments. All the meat is sourced for local humanely raised animals. They have the most amazing garlic kale on the planet. You have to try the garlic kale. They have crayons, paper, and temporary tattoos for kids. The kids meal is also a great deal for $5.

Bars

The owner Michelle is also a potter and handmade every tile in the bar counter, as well as all the serving dishes and lampshades! This bar has great cocktails, locally sources as many of its ingredients as possible, and serves an amazing grilled cheese sandwich.

The rooftop bar on the Durham Hotel (open to anyone, not just guests) not only hosts yoga classes, live music, and serves some food, but also has the best views of Durham sunsets of any bar or restaurant in town.

This cidery makes amazing cider (more than a dozen on tap plus a couple beers). It also had a ton of board games and a lot of space, including a small grassy area where kids can amuse themselves a bit. This is a dog friendly bar!

For people with kids

These are either things to do with kids or restaurants/breweries that are kid friendly.
The jewel of Durham for children of all ages. This place has everything. Two stories of inside play and learning areas for different ages and tons of outdoor things: A butterfly house and insectarium, Into the Mist (great for hot days), Earth Moves (opened 2019, basically replicates the best part of the beach), remote control sailboats, dinosaur trail, play ground and sandbox, brown bears, lemurs, and wolves, a train ($3 to ride), giant amazing tree houses connected by swinging bridges and slides, and a little wading creek. Special area inside for children 5 and under, indoor space for babies as well.

Small but fun. Parents can sit and drink coffee at a bar around the play area and kids can play with a bunch of music-themed structures and toys. Also has a kids karaoke room.

This is a brewery/restaurant BUT it is one that has a "kids corner." This is a small area with a play kitchen, some toys, books, puzzles and coloring table crammed in a corner. It makes it so easy to take a 2 year old out to eat with you though!

Open Saturday mornings (8am in warm season, 10am in cold season), the farmers market sells a lot of art, jewelry, pottery, and stuff that's not just food. There is a small playground right next to it with slides and climbing, as well as a giant lego wall and open grassy field.

This is one of the better breweries to go to with children, though be advised that there is a local battle between HiWire customers who want fewer children there and those who have children. Please don't let your children run wild and bother other patrons! Children are not allowed after 8pm. There are a lot of games in this place. Giant "pool" tables that are actually enclosed pits with balls, etc.
