No ready mades here! Also perfect for just coffee and cake. Take a seat on the bench in front of the window for an interesting view on all the canal traffic, or take place on one of the small (but cozy!) tables in this small modern place. Often very busy on weekends.

Our all time favorite patissier, also supplier to the Rijksmuseum Café. If you are a patisserie lover, then this is a Must Visit. If you like savory better, try their hand made cheese or shrimp croquettes! Family owned since its founding in 1969 and still located in the tiny original shop designed by architect Piet Kramer in 1928. Everything is hand made with high quality ingredients. You might have to line up outside but I guarantee you it is worth the wait!

Amsterdam is getting more and more crowded everyday. If you have time, it is really worth exploring out of town. The historic city of Utrecht can be reached in less than 30 mins by train. Trains stop in the middle of the centre so no further transportation needed. Utrecht has a beautiful canal area with restaurants uniquely located at water level. The historical tall Dom tower makes a great observation place and the newly renovated Hoog Catharijne Mall offers hundreds of options for food and shopping. Museums include: Centraal Museum or the iconic Dick Bruna MIffy (Nijntje) Museum. We highly recommended you spend a day in Utrecht and have no doubt that you will love it just as much as Amsterdam!

The Frans Hals Museum is the oldest art museum in the Netherlands with pieces of the Dutch Masters as well as contemporary art. We highly recommend spending a day in Haarlem and we have no doubt that you will not regret it.

Forget the very commercial beach of Zandvoort and the crowded beach of Bloemendaal. If you want to see the ocean and enjoy some great foods too, this is where you have to be.

The city centre is relatively small. From Amsterdam Central most places of interest can be reached by feet; the red light district, dam square, canal area, 9 streets and even the museum plein.
Unless you are planning to visit other areas than the city centre, you don't really need to use public transport.
Biking is the local way to go but we strongly advise to only use bikes if you are an experienced biker.

Amsterdam has become a very popular destination and the city centre tends to be very crowded. The canal area is a beautiful place to stroll around but please bear in mind that the streets are actually used for traffic. Don't just wonder around and try to stay on the pavements. Be mindful, don't just sit around in the historic canal house staircases; people actually live there.

Use the ferry!
We are located in Tuindorp Oostzaan, a small residential area in Amsterdam North. To get to Amsterdam Central there are 2 options; taking the bus or using the free NDSM ferry; a scenic 12 min ride. It's a 15-20 min walk from our house to NDSM area.

Anne Frank House tickets
Many of our guests like to visit the Anne Frank House. The Anne Frank House is a small and very popular museum; tickets are very limited and it's nearly impossible to buy them while you are here. Tickets are solely being sold online, supposedly -exactly- 2 months in advance. Only a minor amount of tickets is available on the day itself and usually sell out in minutes. If you plan on visiting the Anne Frank House, please plan ahead and check website for details. Good luck.

Layers, layers, layers + Rain Wear
Dutch weather is as unpredictable as life itself, it varies all the time. It can be chilly in Summer and unexpectedly sunny in Winter. Prepare for all sorts of weather; include rain wear and make sure to check the forecast before going out.

Affordable souvenirs
To our displeasure the city centre is overrun by souvenir shops and also cheese stores are on the rise ;-(( What is offered is usually overpriced and everything but authentic. HEMA department store has a small range of more affordable and original souvenirs that are worth checking out.
If you want to bring Stroopwafels, they'll be half the price if you get them at a local supermarket. More options too. Same counts for cheese!
If you want to get something really original and artistic, check out the shops at De Hallen. I Amsterdam Store at Amsterdam Central is also a good place.
