Ducktown, Tennessee and the Ocoee River (1 hour drive from the Treehouse) - The Ocoee River has become recognized as the ultimate river for Tennessee rafting since it was chosen as the venue for the 1996 Olympic whitewater events. Boasting the most continuous class III and IV rapids of any river in the United States, the Ocoee River will give you a romping, rollicking ride through the scenic Ocoee Gorge. Ocoee rafting is synonymous with big waves, warm water, and continuous action - that's why they call it the "Ocoee Coaster!" From beginning to end, the Ocoee will get you soaked, smiling, and laughing. The drive to Tennessee along the river is absolutely gorgeous.

Long Creek, South Carolina and the Chattooga River (1 hour, 10 minute drive) - More than just a label bestowed by Congress, "wild and scenic" perfectly describes this Southeastern whitewater classic. A quarter mile of dense forest up both banks of the waterway is protected from development and not easily accessible, preserving the natural beauty and tranquility of the mountainous terrain of South Carolina's upstate. The river gained celebrity status in the 1970s when it was featured as the backdrop for the adventure thriller, "Deliverance," starring Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight. Floating along the rippling water, you can almost hear "Dueling Banjos" wafting out of the woods.

Bryson City North Carolina and the Nantahala River (1 hour, 10 minute drive) - This location offers river rafting through family-friendly rapids that are mild but exciting. The Nantahala features eight miles of practice on easy Class II rapids before splashing through the exciting Class III whitewater of Nantahala Falls. The Nantahala is also headquarters of the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Founded in 1972, NOC is located at the intersection of the Appalachian Trail and the Nantahala River in the Nantahala National Forest. Originally a roadside inn, the company has evolved into one of the largest outdoor recreation companies in the nation, hosting well over one million guests each year. We love Rivers End Restaurant.

Hike this trail to a gorgeous waterfall that cascades through a 40-foot-tall, towering cliff, slicing the enormous rock outcrop in half. And catch wildflower and waterfall-filled beauty throughout the trail’s 2.5 miles: the hike follows a beautiful, rushing trout stream in a shady, moss-filled forest. Located in the Chattooga Ranger District, this waterfall is perhaps one of the most unusual in north Georgia because the water flows through a split in the face of a solid rock outcropping to the ground 100 feet below. Behind the split, the water drops approximately 60 feet and then rushes through the rock face and drops 20 feet into a deep pool. The water then cascades 20 more feet to Dodd Creek. The trail follows the creek, with several smaller waterfalls along the way. There is not a great elevation change, until the very end, so it’s good for everyone. We like to have lunch at the top.

Anna Ruby Falls is a pair of beautiful waterfalls, cascading in tandem through a beautiful slice of North Georgia forest. The twin waterfalls spill from a towering cliff in wispy white tendrils before splashing and pooling over mossy boulders. It is a great North Georgia outdoor destination in any season – and its proximity to Alpine Helen and Unicoi State Park make it one of the most popular waterfalls in Georgia. These falls are reached by a scenic half-mile interpretive trail that parallels Smith Creek and ends at the base of the falls. The hike is a relatively easy one, and though the outbound trek is mostly uphill, the trail is paved and just under a half-mile. The trail is kid-friendly, stroller-friendly and dog-friendly. And while the twin waterfalls are clearly the main attraction, the trail itself is a beautiful one. The trail climbs to the tumbling waterfall alongside a waterfall-filled creek, catching views of the spilling and splashing creek through the boulder-filled forest. With abundant natural beauty, a rare double waterfall, and relatively easy access, this is one of North Georgia’s most popular trails, and well worth a visit.

With a population of only 430 residents, Helen is Georgia’s third most visited city. This quaint little Alpine village started as home to the Cherokee and then to settlers who came for the gold and timber. Today, people come for the Blue Ridge Mountain setting and the Southeast’s best Bavarian Village glimpse of Germany. Quaint hotels, cobblestone walkways, alpine food and drink are perfect for a family visit. There is Nora Mill granary, established in 1876, it is an operational gristmill sitting alongside the Chattahoochee River with an old-fashioned country store offering stone ground grits, pancake mix, and pioneer porridge. Also, check out Betty’s, a genuine mom & pop store filled with reminders of days gone by like, old fashioned candies and sodas as well as an excellent meat counter and groceries. Restaurants include Troll Tavern and Bigg Daddys. For play, there is a putt-putt golf, tubing the river, zip lining, Alpine fun factory, and mining for gold and gems?

Dry Falls, a popular waterfall located a few miles outside of Highlands, gives you the rare treat of walking safely behind a waterfall. This 75-ft. tall waterfall in the Nantahala National Forest flows over a cliff, allowing you to walk behind the falls and stay dry (hence the name). During rainy spells when the water volume is higher, the spray will prevent you from staying totally dry.

The best barbeque you will ever eat, by far. The smoke from the burning of the cherry wood rises from the ashes to create delicious food. Get there early because there is usually a line out the door- a line that curves around the left side of the porch onto the gravel parking lot. There is an ambiance felt the second you fall into the line, a feeling that settles into your heart as a place you will make many memories either on your vacations, day trips, or, if you are a local, becomes a consistent landing spot for one of your favorite and regular Saturday night dinners. The many accolades received for the distinct taste, quality, and originality of the food and the flavor speak for themselves. Recently named “GA’s Best Place for Ribs” and “Best Place in Georgia for Barbeque”. The sweet potato fries have cinnamon sugar on them, yum-mie.
