Sightseeing
It's a lovely little spot in the pines with a nice waterfall where you can walk out onto the rocks and get up close and person. Beautiful white pines and sand, it's not a bad swim spot either! Watch the paddlers come down the rapids, or throw a tube in and do it yourself. Or, you can rent a kayak at the nearby outfitters (Paddler Coop) which lets you put in right on the river below the rapids. Some nice paddling there!
To get to the dam, go to Jewellville ( just before Palmer) and look for Dam road on the right. Follow it down until you see what looks like a four wheeler trail with a brown forestry sign. It's easily driven by vans or cars. Turn left into that laneway and follow to the end, it's not far, it's easy driving, and there's tons of parking in the pines and lots of room to turn around. Must see!
Palmer Rapids

Hiking trails, cross country ski trails, lookouts, the Visitors Center, and the Loggers Museum. All great things to do while you are in the area. The Loggers museum is completely out doors and worth a trip, it and the Visitors Center are VERY well done and you will be pleasantly surprised!

Algonquin Park
Hiking trails, cross country ski trails, lookouts, the Visitors Center, and the Loggers Museum. All great things to do while you are in the area. The Loggers museum is completely out doors and worth a trip, it and the Visitors Center are VERY well done and you will be pleasantly surprised!

These folks are great, and are on a wonderful spot on a great paddling river, just below the rapids I indicated in the guidebook. They have a few canoes for rent, and they are right on the water so no need to drive. Easy to get to, just before you reach Palmer Rapids, which has a handy general store!

Great People, they have a lively business with lots of offer, a liquor/beer venue, lots of fresh produce, tee shirts, you name it. Also propane tanks and gas. Just past Center Road when coming from the cabin, on your left side.

Carla has some of the best gifts you can find in the area, it's her passion! They have fresh grocery items, frozen food, ice and water, and the gas station next door (run by husband Bob) is handy and has propane and drinks, snacks, and movie rentals. They are a wonderful couple, and have been active in developing Maynooth as a destination. Can't say enough good things about this place, it's your closest spot for all things camping, and I bet if you need it, Carla has it!

Look for Eagles Nest road just south of Canadian Tire on your way into Bancroft. Follow the road up to the parking area and it's just a short walk to the lookout! Very easy walking trail.

Gun Mountain Loop Trail is a 4.3 kilometer lightly trafficked loop trail located near Madawaska Valley, Ontario, Canada that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options.

Nice walk along the abandoned railway bed down the river. A few places to eat. Just a sleepy little town on the edge of Algonquin Park.

This restaurant is one of the best in the area, and it's a short 30 minute drive to Barry's Bay where the gas is VERY cheap due to proximity to Golden Lake Reserve. There are two grocery stores, drug store, and a Stedmans, as well as an impressive Home Hardware. Combine the trip and stop for a meal outside in the summer, they had a great outside spot, very safe, during our Covid summer of 2020. If they still have it, the first Saturday of every month features a Prime Rib dinner which is to die for, find them on facebook and make a reservation! They have an extensive menu and it overlooks Kaminiskeg Lake, so great dining views.

I love this Chinese Food Place! The food is always good and they have takeout during Covid. Look them up on google and do an online order. It's about twenty minutes away.

Who doesn't love Timmies? We actually have two in Bancroft and this is the closest, less than twenty minutes away. The drive through is open, and the Eagles Nest Lookout is across the road. I heard it would reopen this fall, so check it out.

Yummy polish fair. Everyone has gone or will go one day. Some entertainment pre Covid that was usually pretty good. Perogies are awesome! Drive past the pub and up the hill to visit the church for a beautiful view before you leave.
