Welcome to Great Falls! Know around here as "The Electric City". Home to the Native Americans (mainly the Blackfeet) long before it was modernly discovered by Lewis and Clark on their journey of exploring the Louisiana Purchase in 1805. The expedition spent a month navigating over the river falls and documented the area very thoroughly. In 1882, Paris Gibson came out West with plans to build the city. Carefully thought out precise and practical streets and beautiful intentionally placed parks became the framework of our little city. Strategically placed to aid in westward expansion through the railroad, Great Falls has grown and thrived through the years. The home of Charles M. Russell and the many western works of art he produced. The old Anaconda Copper Company smoke stack was a long standing landmark (at 585 feet tall) for many years, until it fell in 1982.
Now you know a brief history of our city - and why you'll see so many buildings called "Paris Gibson" or named after "Charlie Russell". The History Museum in downtown Great Falls is a wealth of information and photographs for more information.
