Neighborhoods

For some the most authentic Milan, for others only the noisiest, certainly one of the most fascinating areas of city. The canals were artificially built between the 12th and 16th centuries throughout Milan to allow access to water and to transport goods around the city. Most of them, however, were covered in the Fascist era, leaving only three canals, two of which are connected by the "Darsena" in Piazza 24 Maggio. The neighborhood is now at the center of Milan's nightlife. Along the canals there are dozens of bars where you can have a suggestive aperitif when the sun goes down. As already mentioned, this area is particularly famous for its nightlife, which is extremely chaotic and noisy. The two canals are dotted with bars, and usually host a bustle of people until late at night. In Darsena also many people stop for a drink and meet up with friends. But perhaps the most suggestive place to go remains the columns, which was one of the main places where I went out at high school. Every now and then someone comes there with the guitar and starts playing, and the whole square joins in singing.

Sightseeing

In recent years, this area has been a huge construction site, and has even risked hosting a horrible parking lot. There have been many controversies about the fate of the Darsena, but it is not surprising: part of the history of Milan is preserved in this district, and its inhabitants are rightly fond of it. There is no lack of greenery, and from the narrow streets of the area you can enjoy the view of unprecedented panoramas of the historic center. The sunset is one of the most evocative moments in which to take a tour between Darsena and Piazza 24 Maggio.

It is one of the latest arrivals in the Milanese cultural offer, but the quality is top of the class. The MUDEC collects temporary ethnographic collections, as well as a permanent collection made up of private donations. The theme is the relationship between the city and the other populations that inhabit the planet. Inside you will also find a beautiful design store, a bistro and the restaurant of Enrico Bartolini, with three Michelin stars, the only three-star restaurant in Milan.

One of the oldest buildings in Milan, founded in the 4th century, the basilica has been rebuilt and enlarged several times, with new cloisters and chapels. In the medieval bell tower, 75m high, there is the first mechanical clock in history. At the top there is an eight-pointed star, which according to tradition marks the burial place of the Magi: it seems that it is here, in fact, that Sant'Eustorgio had to stop when he transported their relics from Constantinople, in 344. Alongside you will find the Diocesan Museum, which houses a collection of relics and sacred furnishings inside a very suggestive convent. The entrance to the museum also gives access to the basilica museum, the early Christian necropolis, the Solarian chapels and the Portinari chapel.

This basilica also dates back to the 4th century, but its early Christian origins are hardly visible: it has in fact undergone many transformations over the centuries, including the construction of a dome which is the largest in Milan. Inside, the Chapel of Sant’Aquilino stands out for its splendid mosaics, as well as a copy of Leonardo's Last Supper. Outside, however, you will find a statue of Constantine, emperor who was responsible for the legalization of Christian religion with the famous edict of Milan in 313 AD.

The 16 marble columns with Corinthian capitals are all that remains of the quadriportico of the Basilica of San Lorenzo at the time when Milan was the capital of the Roman Empire. It is therefore no surprise that, in the immediate vicinity, there was the emperor's palace: the "Imperial Palace of Maximian". The palace is now in ruins, but it's nice enough to go there, especially at night. You shouldn't enter the ruins, but if you do, it can be a romantic experience. The columns are also the center of the nightlife of the area, surrounded by small bars that sell beers that can also be consumed sitting in the square under the columns. The area is often very crowded, but very characteristic.

In the Vicolo dei Lavandai, it is possible to admire an incredible wash house dating back to the last century. A testimony of a time when there was no washing machine and, consequently, we were forced to resort to manual methods, which were, without a doubt, much more demanding. Another aspect that arouses curiosity is that, unlike what is usually thought, here, it was not women but men who took care of washing clothes. In fact, it was they who created their own and true trade association

Food & Restaurants

In the morning it is a common fish shop, right in the center of Piazza XXIV Maggio, but from noon onwards it turns into an excellent Italian fish and chips. The scent of fried food can be felt from far away, but it is the delicious taste of fish that has always attracted customers. At lunch, before you manage to win your fry, consider waiting at least 15 minutes.

The location is nothing short of superb, one of my favorites in Milan. In an old warehouse transformed into a retro-style restaurant, with a delightful garden that really allows you to dine 'al fresco' on spring evenings. Traditional Italian dishes come out of the kitchen, with a particular attention to the quality of ingredients

If you are a lover of surprise tasting menus, this is the place for you. The restaurant is very small (in fact it only has 28 seats available), but it makes up for it with the great culinary offer. So let yourself be surprised by a culinary journey of 5, 8 or 10 courses; trust me, it will amaze yo

If you want to try the authentic Milanese cutlet ('elephant ear') this is the place for you: as the owner always repeats, it is the only cutlet really fried in butter. But even choosing the dish of the day you will hardly be disappointed. In addition, the external part of the restaurant in front of the basilica enjoys a magical atmosphere: the view of Corso di Porta Ticinese is worth the expense.

Cocktail Bars

The most famous place in the Naviglio Grande. During the day a coffee shop with excellent herbal teas, while at night it turns into a pub with an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere. It is a small treasure chest of beauty in the chaos of the Navigli. The interiors are very neat and when it is not too crowded there is a special atmosphere.

If you are tired of craft beers and want to go out to drink wine, this is the place for you. Here, only sparkling wines are drunk, strictly Italian. The managers are very knowledgeable, so get advice directly from them. Local writers and artists are among the regular visitors, attracted by tastings, musical or literary evenings.

The RAB (that is, 'Bar' backwards) is managed by the Baracca Onlus cooperative, which aims to place people with intellectual disabilities in the workplace. It is a place with a joyful atmosphere, very well furnished, with all different tables (one is an iron, which I was lucky enough to sit at once) and vintage pieces.

The bar already attracts from the sign, but the interiors are also very suggestive: you will be surrounded by pendulum clocks and display cases with bottles of old medicines. The managers call themselves 'pharmacists', but in addition to rivers of alcohol, the place also prepares delicious ‘arrosticini’. There are often concerts by local bands (this is how I came to know the place).

Although it is not a particularly noteworthy bar, it is still the meeting point for a large section of the Milanese youth, and it is where I sometimes used to go out when I went to Ticinese. The place is usually very crowded but the strictly craft beers are very good.

From the outside it may seem like a simple chupiteria. But this place is much, much more. Recommended only for the most daring, if you want to spend an unforgettable evening full of spectacular and extravagant 'challenges' (I just tell you that the main challenge is to wear a helmet and get hit on the head by various objects). The bartenders are great, extremely nice and helpful. An evening here will remove from your minds the idea of Milan as a snob and haughty.
