This was the third largest "Minoan" palace of its time destroyed by a massive tsunami around 1600 BCE. If you look, there is also quite a bit of pumice left over from the explosion of Thera on Santorini which destroyed the old palace of Malia. It is a hauntingly beautiful place. You will love it!

This is an excellent site, original, complete and it's easy to imagine what's missing. There are information boards in English that include drawings that help the visitor imagine what has been lost to time. The restaurant, gift shop and restrooms on site are clean and useful.

Fascinating small island off the east coast of Crete. Once a Venetian fortress, then a leper colony, the island is full of historical artefacts. Well preserved in some places, reconstructed or left to ruin in others, the island has a church, the remains of a fortress, streets where the leper population would live, a number of museum exhibits, and wonderful views. Well worth a visit.
