MacDonald observatory has great star parties where you get to look through the telescopes at night. The surrounding Davis Mountains are very scenic but easy to drive throgh. Ft Davis and it's museum is the Old West but close to san Antonio, only a 7 hour drive. Limpia Hotel is good and also the state park. Lots of hiking. Big Bend only 2 hour drive south from here.

Corpus Christi has a beach, a waterfront strolling area, bay boat trips, an aquarium, a Navy Ship "The Lexington" you can board, and great restaurants down by the bay. It's about a 2.5- hour drive from my house, but the $5 Megabus goes there, too
