140-Year Old House: Experience Authentic Japan

Popular for Nakanojo Biennale tourism. MAYUDAMA HOUSE is a renovated old-Japanese art house with 140 years of history. Built in the late Edo period, when the Shogunate was reigning, this house was used as a silk mill in the 19th century. Surrounded by lush nature, the house nests in a region with deep forests and hot springs. One of the nearby hot springs is Kusatsu which is one of the most famous in Japan, where the Shogun came to rest, and became a model for the ghibli film “Spirited Away”.

Asama Mori is a private onsen property located in an exclusive resort in Kita-Karuizawa. Our villa is hidden in abundant nature that changes with the beautiful colors of the seasons. Powder Peaks is an ideal getaway to explore spectacular Mt. Myoko. Our house can accommodate up to 12 guests, and it is just a short 5 minutes drive to the ski lifts as well as all restaurants in Akakura Onsen. It was originally built as a family house in 1987. We purchased this little place in 2019 to transform it into a self contained chalet. We have preserved much of the original feel, but hope that you find the renovations have made the house convenient and comfortable for your stay.
