It is one of the two national mosques, the other being Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Construction works began in 1988 on a 20-acre site in Kiarong and the mosque was inaugurated on 14 July 1994 with the Sultan attending the Maghrib and Isha prayers in conjunction with His Majesty's 48th birthday celebration. The mosque can accommodate 5,000 worshippers at a time, making it the largest mosque in the country. The mosque has 29 golden domes and four minarets with height of 58 metres which is approximately 190 feet.

Built in 1992 to celebrate the 25th year of the current sultan's reign, Brunei's largest mosque and its four terrazzo-tiled minarets dominate their surroundings.
