Blackwood Canyon is a great, free place to hang out year-round. In summer, there's great hiking: try Eagle Rock (steep but short, up to a ledge that looks directly onto a lake) or Ellis Peak (super scenic!). In winter, there’s room to park at the base, and then dogs, sleds, snowshoes, cross-country skis and other methods of transportation are all welcome.
