The Plaza de Oriente is a square in the historic center of Madrid, Spain. Rectangular in shape and monumental in character, it was designed in 1844 by Narciso Pascual y Colomer. The square was propagated by King Joseph I, who ordered the demolition of the medieval houses on the site.
Take a stroll through Plaza de Oriente and you'll soon get in touch with Madrid's history—and some of its natural beauty, too. At the center, you will find a statue of King Philip IV on horseback, and surrounding the plaza, you will see rows of statues of Spanish kings. If you can swing it, you should definitely try to make it here for a sunset, when the sunlight gracefully highlights the surrounding buildings, the most notable of which is the Palacio Real. But, if you're here during the daytime, you'll definitely want to amble through the surrounding gardens—and soak up some spectacular natural beauty while you're at it.
